Rochester has been in existence since 1722, so those interested in American history will love this place. It has a number of beautiful old buildings, and all the charm of a small New England town. More than that, though, it has a great restaurant scene for a town its size. Yes, seafood is a definite highlight, but there’s something for everyone. Here are our 10 favorite places to start.

You get two in one with Granite Steak & Grill, as you’ll find the cozy Smokey’s Tavern in the downstairs section of the restaurant. For the ultimate comfort food, try their macaroni and cheese, which you can get with honey ham, prime rib, buffalo chicken, or lobster.

Windjammers Seafood Restaurant

Windjammers may not look like much from the outside, but inside is bright and nicely decorated, and the high quality of the food really speaks for itself. What they’re really known for is the clam chowder but they also have a fish chowder that is fantastic. They’ve got so many great fresh fish options that it’s often a good idea to go with the Old Salt seafood combination meal, which gives you haddock, sea scallop, shrimp, and clam strips all together.

Hotel Restaurant, Restaurant, American

The Governor’s Inn gives you a two in one restaurant offer. They’ve got Spaulding Steak & Ale, which has various sections that include one room with a pub-like atmosphere and another, fancier section, and the very casual Garage restaurant. Garage has an impressive list of sandwiches and burgers, whereas the food at Spaulding Steak & Ale is slightly more upscale. For some of their best entrees, try the panko pecan dusted salmon, or the steak tips and scallops with a Scotch glaze. Both have weekly specials, so check in advance to see what tempts you the most.

Revolution TapRoom & Grill

New Hampshire is very tightly connected to its revolutionary history, so Revolution TapRoom & Grill takes its name very seriously. Beer lovers will immediately find a home here, as they have plenty of taps and an ever changing, varied list of microbrews from near and far. Their menu is no less enticing, particularly because they use locally caught fish, locally raised beef, and locally grown vegetables.
