Charlestown, the oldest neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, is a living museum. Here you’ll find the USS Constitution, the earliest-commissioned Navy ship still afloat; the Warren Tavern, the oldest tavern in the state; and the Bunker Hill Monument, a memorial to mark the first major skirmish in the American Revolution. It’s served by a collection of superb hotels, the best of which are found below.
Embracing a deep, rich color scheme with hanging drapes reminiscent of a luxury Bedouin tent, the Moroccan provides a relaxing, romantic environment. That runs into the suites, which ramp up the romance with sink-into-me beds, private bathrooms and a fireplace. There’s no restaurant on site, but you can grab a snack from the communal kitchenette as you head out to walk the Freedom Trail, go to a baseball game at Fenway Park or explore the hip neighborhood.
If you’re looking for an extended stay, this Residence Inn is ideal. It’s centrally located, so you’ll be able to hoof it to TD Garden for a Bruins ice hockey game and the historic North End. And in the evenings, return to your one- or two-bedroom suite and rustle up something in the kitchen or take a dip in the indoor pool, the latter has views of the Boston Harbor boat moorings.
A 25ft (7m) sculpture of an armillary (a celestial sphere) in the courtyard is a spectacular start to your stay at the Kimpton Marlowe. That continues inside where you’ll find lavish and artful decor, plus a fitness center, evening wine tastings, loaner bikes and a Mediterranean restaurant. For an additional fee, you can avail yourself of fun things such as courtyard movies, stand-up paddleboards in the summer and sleds and snowshoes in the winter. The hotel is located across the river from downtown Boston and only 4mi (6.5km) from Logan Airport.
The Royal Sonesta is a high-rise luxury hotel with views over Boston and the Charles River. Here you’ll discover a gallery-worthy art collection, best enjoyed at the ArtBar restaurant with a dollop of New England cuisine and glug of wine. Get your day off right, with a swim in the atrium pool or work out at the gym before hitting Studio Café & Bakery for a latte and house-made pastry.
This hip hotel is all about the hi-tech touches. Forget your traditional room key, all you need is an app to enter. You’ll also find a MoodPad in your room, which can close blinds, dim lights and control the TV. A good night’s sleep is almost guaranteed with blackout blinds and soundproof windows. And if you’re too tired to explore the eclectic restaurant scene nearby, just grab a bite from canteenM.
This punchy boutique hotel sits within the triangular Flatiron Building, a short stroll from TD Garden. If you’re inspired by the name to go full Rocky, there’s a serviceable fitness center on site or you can use the more extensive gym facilities and swimming pools at Charles River Park. Alternatively, borrow one of the red hotel bikes to tool around the neighborhood. The hotel is also partnered with City Winery, a 300-person music venue with fine dining and wine-making facilities; speak to reception for a tour.
Jutting over the water at Boston Harbor, Battery Wharf is an eye-catching retreat. And the stylish 150-room hotel takes full advantage of the stunning location, with gorgeous views particularly enjoyable while eating surf and turf at the open-air terrace of Battery Wharf Grille. Days can be spent in the award-winning Exhale Spa or fitness center. In the evening, head to the 24-hour observation deck to enjoy the city and harbor lights.
The contemporary Onyx Hotel features a personal touch – there’s even a director of pet relations to make your furry friends feel at home. With a 24-hour fitness center and free hotel bikes, you’ll be encouraged to stay fit during your stay. For relaxation, try an in-room spa treatment and then enjoy your evening at the Ruby Room, with craft cocktails and casual bites.
With a red brick facade, the Whitney seamlessly ingratiates itself within the Beacon Hill neighborhood. But inside you’ll find an elegant 65-room boutique that combines style and luxury amenities. Guestrooms come with Frette bathrobes and organic Grown Alchemist amenities; book one of the four suites with a Charles River view. Hungry? Head to Peregrine, a fine dining restaurant with Mediterranean influences.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
