Feel the wind rushing through your hair and sing Queen at the top of your lungs, you know you want to. Our local insiders have rounded up the best cycling in and around Orlando to suit all cyclists. From the wildlife-spotting off-roaders to the Saturday afternoon tootlers, we’ve got you covered.

1. Orlando Urban Trail

Architectural Landmark

Running through the heart of the city and downtown Orlando, the Urban Trail is referred to as the spine of the cities trail network. Being largely off-road means it is a safe option and the perfect way to take in much of the city. Pass through Loch Haven Park, Mead Garden and Orlando Cultural Park and a whopping six lakes on the trail. All bikers need sustenance, and this doesn’t disappoint, with many local and delicious eateries along the route. There’s even a local winery at one point if you need a very relaxing (and long!) break. Recommended by local insider Korri Lacalamita

2. Critical Mass Orlando

Park

Join Orlando’s biggest bike gang and ride through the streets like you own the place. Okay, it isn’t quite like that – not at all actually. The Critical Mass Orlando group are a friendly bunch, meeting every Friday to ride around the city and raise awareness of cyclists in their city. They’re very welcoming, and the energy of the ride is infectious. Bring along a water backpack if you can, as it is difficult to stop for water in such a big group. 3. Lake Apopka Trail

Hiking Trail

If you like your cycling with a side of alligator, then the Lake Apopka Loop Trail is for you. And who doesn’t? This is a standout trail for the sheer quantity of incredible wildlife you have the chance of spotting. The restored marsh area is an environmental sanctuary to over 300 species of birds, snakes and alligators. The trail is a real mix of smooth and flat parts, and “oh god why is it so rough?” bits, so make sure to plan your route properly before you go and have the correct bike with you. 4. Celebration Nature Trails

Hiking Trail

The small town of Celebration was designed by Walt Disney with expert social architects and town planners creating the “perfect” place to live. A cycle through Celebration’s nature trails is picturesque, quaint and uncannily neat. Large, picture-perfect houses are bright in color, the grass is all exactly the same length, and residents doff their hats as you pass. Surreal. The trails connect each village in the town, so you’ll see a lot and there are many restaurants at which to rest and refuel. Rent a bicycle or take a tour with an expert guide. 5. Lake Baldwin Trail

Hiking Trail

The beautiful, shady park of Lake Baldwin stretches 20 acres (8ha) around the water, offering tree-filled spots to rest and recoup as well as, uniquely, a sandy beach. The trail itself runs 2.5 miles (4km) lakeside and is the perfect spot for runners, walkers and, of course, cyclists. As you exert yourself, keep your eyes peeled as the lake is home to herons, storks, ibis and cranes – and if you’re really lucky, you might spot a resident otter as you cycle.
