The Best Bars In Dogpatch District San Francisco

Far out into the old docks, just east of AT&T Park, comes the long stretch of 3rd Street that reaches out into Hunter’s Point. Just before the China Basin lies the Dogpatch District, where many have ventured out and set up shop (and taps) to take advantage of the industrial warehouses and accessibility to much raw material. Within the past couple of years, bars of all sorts have opened their doors, offering great beer and wine selections. Here are some of the best.

The Ramp

Bar, Restaurant, American

The Ramp Restaurant and Bar is located just where it has stood since its original function as a bait shop, before it was converted into a dining room and patio with a close-up view of the stationed ships along the bay. It’s worth the lunch-break commute for the hefty menu, including a fairly priced fish and chips. Beer selection is reasonable, and the outside patio is comfortable.

Third Rail

Cocktail Bar, American

A popular first-stop-of-the-night along 3rd street, Third Rail tequila and jerky cantina is located just off the 20th St MUNI Rail and bus route 22. The dim lighting and industrial finish greet you, and soon you’ll have to have the featured ‘Rail Shot’, a little beer, a little tequila, and a little bit of jerky (there’s also shiitake mushroom jerky for those vegetarians out there). If you plan to station yourself there and indulge in the drink, consider the jerky pairing, meticulously composed to tease the palate.

Dogpatch Saloon

This corner saloon offers a fair evening of Bay Area sports and well-made cocktails, with beers on tap. With a small food menu to complement the drinks, Dogpatch Saloon is the ideal place to congregate. There is plenty of seating, including three ample booths and enough chairs for large parties.

Poquito

Restaurant, American

A little bit of a Latin twist to the Dogpatch, Poquito offers an array of food and drinks to challenge the taste buds. With a surplus of red and white sangria and also a fine selection of tequila, mezcal, and pisco, this bar and lounge is worth the visit. The cocktails feature seasonal selections like the current Noche Fresca, Dia del Sol, and Anejo Sazerac, to name a few that lure connoisseurs.

Yield

Bar, Wine Bar, Pub Grub

The newest addition to the Dogpatch strip, Yield wine bar offers you a seat where you can immerse yourself in a number of fine wines. Yield is committed to organic and biodynamic wines, essentially, anything that promotes a sustainable agriculture.

Serpentine

Restaurant, American, Mexican

Although Serpentine doesn’t open until 5pm, and happy hour is only from 5pm to 6pm, the menu offers an eclectic selection of cocktails that you will simply have to check off your list on every subsequent visit. Vodka, gin, bourbon, and tequila combine with herbs and spices like thyme and jalapeño shrub to form some rather active concoctions. If you plan to stay for dinner, you’re really in for a treat.

Smokestack

Don’t mind the elbow-to-elbow seating; Smokestack is a free-for-all in the drink and food department. With over 25 beers on tap and a wide variety of hard liquors, the food may seem to take a backseat, but don’t be fooled. With a sandwich menu featuring fresh cuts and classic toppings, you won’t be certain whether the cold brew or the meaty sandwich is the main course.

Triple Voodoo Tap Room

With weekly events featuring cooks and other breweries, Triple Voodoo sets a great tone and is ideal for large parties or other big groups. With its very own beers on tap and a small tour of the microbrewery operations on offer, the Triple Voodoo Tap Room is a place for open discussion and celebration.

The Sea Star

Stop by the Sea Star for a more relaxing vibe while still maintaining the classic dive-bar feel. It seems a bit hidden, as it blends in with the neighboring buildings, but if you look hard enough and spot the star logo, you’re welcomed to a Dogpatch delight.
