It’s got a sunny, balmy climate year-round and dozens of beaches. There’s a terrific dining scene, the lively Gaslamp Quarter in downtown and world-famous attractions such as the San Diego Zoo. San Diego certainly lives up to its moniker “America’s finest city.” The eighth-largest metropolis in the USA is appealingly laid-back given its sheer size, perhaps due to the high surfer count – and ensuing vibe. California is car territory, but you’ll want to be still for some of your holiday. If you’re looking to leave your wheels somewhere safe, hotels with parking in San Diego are as reliable as they’re relaxing – book one with Culture Trip right here.

1. Gaslamp Plaza Suites

The marble and chandeliers of the lobby hark back to the Roaring Twenties, when this venerable, century-old downtown hotel was built – but the carpeted, soundproofed rooms come replete with contemporary comforts, such as coffee machines, air conditioning and plasma-screen TVs. San Diego hotels with parking are highly sought-after in the buzzy Gaslamp Quarter, and this hotel is right in the heart of the action: the historic Balboa Theatre is a block away and dozens of restaurants and bars are a few minutes’ walk away. Essentially, you’re in a prime position. Switch off and soak it up.

2. The Westgate Hotel

Welcome to another fine specimen of San Diego hospitality: there’s free parking at this downtown landmark, and the Westgate combines a super-central location with an elegant interior. Among the property’s defining features are the wonderful views over Broadway and the Gaslamp Quarter from its rooftop pool, the grand staircase, a baby grand in the Plaza Bar and crystal chandeliers in the Westgate Room restaurant, which offers French-Californian fine dining. Make the most of the full-service spa, grab a dinner or two – or step out to sample the varied dining establishments nearby. You won’t go hungry.

3. Andaz San Diego – a concept by Hyatt

It works well, this melding of a historic 1913 exterior and a 21st-century design aesthetic, courtesy of Andaz, the Hyatt’s groovy brand label. The whole thing is visually striking, from the pleated-leather columns and distinctive fixtures in the lobby, to the bold murals in the common spaces and welcome splashes of color in the form of contemporary art prints in the suites. Highlights for us are the rooftop restaurant that serves local craft beer and looks down on the bright lights of the Gaslamp Quarter from its stellar location right on the fringes of downtown. But other welcome perks include a pool and gym.

5. San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina

Chain Hotel

A little farther west along the waterfront, the gleaming half-moon edifice of this modern hotel looks out over the rows of yachts moored in the marina below. The rooms are all lushly carpeted, colored with gentle creams – the exception is the Hospitality Suite with its polished wooden floors and leather-backed sofas, worth considering if you’re here for a special splurge. Sea views are a given, while the irregular-shaped pool, surrounded by a palm tree grove, is a fine holiday oasis which completes the appeal of this tranquil base. Need some action? The Gaslamp Quarter is close by.

6. Bahia Resort Hotel

It’s all about the location at this peninsula resort: top marks for unimpeded views of Mission Bay and its yachts, as well as nearby Mission Beach, with its 2mi (3.2km) boardwalk, laid-back community vibe and waterfront restaurants. The location appeals to families, since it’s a five-minute drive from SeaWorld San Diego and, within it, Splish Splash water park. Bahia Resort Hotel is also one of the few San Diego hotels with free parking. Added attractions are floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the garden or the sea, a pool and a hot tub. Caesar salads and burgers in-house at Café Bahia make evenings magic, too.

7. Loews Coronado Bay Resort

Hotel

This hugely popular luxury bay resort is all about privacy, enclosed on its own private 15-acre (6ha) peninsula, complete with a full-service marina and no fewer than three pools. At this rarefied remove from the city, it ensures chill-out time for its guests – sip a signature cocktail in the hot tub, take a ride on a Venetian-style gondola around San Diego Bay with your significant other, walk over to nearby Silver Strand Beach, or commit to indolence and indulge in a sea stone massage at the on-site Sea Spa + Fitness.

8. The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Luxury, Spa Hotel

This boutique resort feels rather like a ski lodge transplanted on California’s shores, with its wood-paneled interior, fireplaces and quiet setting among pine trees just north of trendy La Jolla. Appealing wood-and-stone buildings overlook the Torrey Pines golf course, and active travelers are just a few minutes’ drive from the hiking trails of the namesake nature reserve. The elegant, timbered AR Valentien restaurant on site specializes in refined regional fare – caramelized sea scallops and summer squash tagliatelle is a treat. While dining, admire the artwork by the early-1900s California artist it’s named after.
