1. The Wayfarer Downtown LA

Downtown’s urban-chic Wayfarer hotel offers travelers the chance to cook in a kitchen good enough for a top chef. The process is simple: choose from a set menu of Californian dishes, receive a box full of fresh ingredients and get cracking, meeting fellow guests as you cook. Other social spots at the Wayfarer – which has upmarket dorms or private rooms – include the Gaslighter Social Club, where you can create your own beer flights, sultry basement bar Lilly Rose and a rooftop cocktail joint with skyline views.

2. The Historic Broadlind Hotel

Long Beach’s finest self-catering accommodation is the Historic Broadlind Hotel, which occupies a 1920s building in the East Village Arts District. Formerly a 21-room lodging popular with visiting naval officers, the hotel now offers 20 elegant suites, from studios to the 550sqft (51sqm) penthouse, all of which have remodeled kitchenettes equipped with appliances, cookware and utensils. There are also four stylish hangouts on the premises, including the Blind Donkey Whiskey Lounge – an eventful den of iniquity during the Prohibition era.

If you have an early-morning flight, Marriott’s three-star Residence Inn LAX/Century Boulevard is hard to beat in terms of Los Angeles hotels with suites, especially for self-catering facilities. Just a 0.5mi (0.8km) from the international airport, each room – from one-bed studios to two-bedroom suites, some with views LAX’s runway – has a kitchen equipped with a microwave, a double stovetop, utensils, cookware and a full-size fridge. If you have time, you can also relax around the outside heated pool or work out in the 24/7 fitness center.

Cooks will find plenty of toys to play with at Homewood Suites, a Hilton accommodation less than a mile from Long Beach Airport and a 20-minute drive from Downtown Long Beach. The whitewashed, almost space-age, suites sleep between four and six people, and each one comes with a full kitchen equipped with a two-burner stovetop, a full-size fridge, a microwave and stainless-steel pans and utensils. There’s even a dishwasher, enabling you to help with the cleaning. In case you lose the inclination to cook, a complimentary breakfast is available every morning.

5. LEVEL Furnished Living

Halfway between LAX (4mi/6km to the north) and the trendy district of Manhattan Beach (3mi/5km to the west), Hyatt House looks and feels more like a gated residential community than a hotel. All of its 122 rooms and suites offer shiny kitchens with everything required to make a decent meal, as well as Hyatt’s enormous, trademarked Grand Beds. There is also a small but well-stocked 24/7 grocery store where you can buy ingredients or prepared items, as well as a pool terrace and an on-site cocktail specialist, H Bar.

7. Venice Breeze Suites

If you want an extended beachfront stay, Venice Breeze Suites is an idyllic self-catering accommodation on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. Suites range in size from studios to one-bedroom apartments, all of which have a kitchen equipped with a stovetop, a microwave, a fridge and utensils. Most also have panoramic – or at least partial – views over Venice Beach’s pristine sands and bright-blue sea. You can also soak up the SoCal sun on the rooftop deck, complete with a barbecue, a wet bar and loungers.

8. TownePlace Suites by Marriott Los Angeles LAX/Hawthorne

Marriott’s TownePlace Suites is a smart, functional Los Angeles hotel with kitchenettes just a 10-minute drive from LAX. The studios come with either one king or two queen beds (both also have sofa beds), and all have a microwave, a full-size fridge, a two-burner stovetop and plenty of cookware and silverware. Some are also installed right next to the giant TVs, so you can catch up on Netflix while prepping your ingredients (keep your eyes on the knife, though). If you overindulge, work it off on the sports court or in the fitness center or whirlpool.
