For much of the Mexican Baja California Peninsula, you’ll see more coyotes and eagles than people. But, at Los Cabos (which combines the resort destinations of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo) in the far south, there’s an oasis of golf courses and ultra-luxurious resort hotels. They cluster behind a coastline of rock-framed bays and dune-backed golden beaches that stretch so far you could walk along them for days.

The Cape

This boxy Cabo San Lucas resort squats over a gorgeous infinity pool, with mesmerizing views from the rooms. Corner suites perch over a crumbling rocky coast, a vast beach and the blue Pacific. Balconies in the panorama suites, which have the best views, come with telescopes for whale- and star-watching. The decor throughout is tastefully understated: with painted Moroccan-style floor tiles, free-standing tubs and wall-high windows framing that Los Cabos natural beauty.

One&Only Palmilla

This mock-hacienda hotel discreetly nestles in a large coconut palm grove on low cliffs over a honey-colored beach. Luxurious villas, secluded and grand enough for an off-duty celebrity (with a private cinema and bespoke chef), dot the shady garden; capacious casitas with private pools sit on the shore. The standard rooms to book are the Premier Oceanfronts – with elevated Pacific views and oodles of balcony and bedroom space.

Grand Velas Los Cabos

Resort

Three near-Olympic-sized swimming pools, a myriad of restaurants, bars and cafes, and more than 300 rooms honeycombing a concrete half-moon by the beach – the Grand Velas will please those who want it all. The facilities (a fountain-tinkling spa, an award-winning restaurant and an adjacent golf course) are princely, and the desert, beach and ocean views from all the rooms – through floor-to-ceiling windows – are jaw-dropping.

Chileno Bay Resort

Hotel

With modern, minimalist, Mykonos-white glass-fronted, low-rise buildings hugging a rocky peninsula next to a half-moon bay, Chileno blends with the Baja landscape more harmoniously than its concrete neighbors. But, it doesn’t skimp on luxury: the pool, which is lined with lounge-pavilions-for-two, is football-field long and winds through a fragrant palm and cactus garden. The Comal restaurant is one of the best in Los Cabos, and cocktail-lounge spaces are perfectly positioned for a sunset over the water.

Nobu Hotel

With low-rise buildings, rooms at the Nobu come in understated, warm woods and whites. Low beds, plenty of space and wall-high windows with Asian wooden screens bring Japanese-inspired elegance to Los Cabos. The restaurant and poolside bar serve Nobu Matsuhisa’s Asian fusion cuisine, and there are a steakhouse and a Mexican dining room for those wanting a change. The spa is one of the best in Los Cabos – with hydrotherapy facilities and Natura Bissé products.

Paradisus Los Cabos

Hotel

With seven restaurants, a variety of suites, a kids’ concierge, a huge pool and a beach with waves gentle enough for swimming, the Paradisus is popular with families. The kids’ zone, with circus performances, sports and movies shown under the stars, is engaging enough to give adults some private time. And the restaurants offer everything from Mexican food and burgers to Asian cooking, plus there’s a golf course on the doorstep.

Hotel El Ganzo

Boutique Hotel

Hotel El Ganzo

It may only have a tiny sliver of beach (washed by calm waves, unlike most in Los Cabos), but El Ganzo makes up for this with a beautiful rooftop infinity pool (poised for sunset views over the ocean, cocktail in hand.) Stylish, modern rooms, all with full or partial marina and ocean views, are great value compared to many other Los Cabos boutiques.

Las Ventanas al Paraiso

Resort

Mediterranean-meets-Mexican villas and suites set over an infinity pool, a 24-hour butler and director of romance, rooms filled with opulent antiques and crafts – Las Ventanas is the height of Los Cabos luxury. The plushest accommodation in the Warner mansion includes a tequila library and a glass-bottomed rooftop pool, and there’s an Instagram picture opportunity waiting at every turn – from the ocean-perched balconies to dining booths set into a pool under a lantern-hung tree.
