Nonna translates to “grandmother” in Italian, and this charming restaurant in the heart of swanky Mexico City neighborhood Polanco offers traditional, hearty Italian food made from the best ingredients. Rustic simplicity is what you get at Nonna, along with that heartwarming sense of being at home in this cozy and comfortable restaurant. Nonna also offers a spacious terrace for those wishing to dine al fresco. Don’t feel pressured to try the house specials, although the gnocchi della nonna is particularly tasty.

2. Vecchio Forno

Offering delicious and freshly made pasta dishes, award-winning Vecchio Forno is a pizzeria and trattoria rightfully proud of its meals featuring ingredients sourced daily from the market. The portions are perfectly sized and attractively presented, with great attention to detail. Saffron risotto with king prawns is a particularly standout dish, if you want to try something beyond the typical pizzas and pastas which can also be found at Vecchio Forno. For pizzas, the quattro stagioniis a treat which features cheese, ham, artichoke hearts, and black olives.

3. Brassi

Opened in August 2009, Brassi offers a trendy dining environment to match the trendy neighborhood in which it can be found. A definite hotspot for the Mexican in-crowd, this restaurant serves simple, gourmet standard Italian meals, but for very reasonable prices. Hands down the best night to visit is Sunday. Unsurprisingly, live jazz music blends very well with friendly chat and delicious food. People watchers should do their utmost to reserve an outside table and settle down with a drink to soak up the youthful, buzzing atmosphere to be found in Polanquito.

4. Cantinetta del Becco

Restaurant, Italian

Lilac tones dominate this sophisticated restaurant in which the kitchen can be seen from the tables as the menu created by a staff of international chefs comes to life before your eyes. Aside from the sumptuous decor, the food is divinely authentic and great value for money, but watch out for the very expensive Italian wine menu. The truffle menu is the big draw of this restaurant, and all of them can be enjoyed on the absolutely gorgeous terrace. Dress to impress at Cantinetta del Becco.

5. Quattro

Restaurant, Italian

Founded in 2006 by twin brothers from Piamonte, Italy, Quattro showcases northern Italian culinary delights in this swanky Santa Fe restaurant in the Marriott hotel. Chef Stefano Ferrero, also from Piamonte, ensures that all the ingredients used at Quattro are specially sourced and selected, meaning the quality of his dishes is flawless. Sit back and enjoy the high quality, attentive service from the wait staff and definitely don’t miss the opportunity to try the amazing, imported burratta cheese and risottos.
