Instituto de la Artesanía Jalisciense

If you are looking for mementos that are a little more unique than the typical tourist fare, head to the government-run Instituto de la Artesanía Jalisciense (Institute of Jalisco Artisanry) just south of downtown. The shop contains two floors of jewelry, pottery, glass and leather goods from Jalisco state and beyond. It also has museum displays showcasing impressive handicrafts and regional clothing.

Boutique Tequila y Arte

Spirit lovers should not visit Guadalajara without heading to the city’s Boutique Tequila y Arte, which boasts a splendid collection of Mexico’s signature beverage. The shop holds a range of aged, specially-selected tequilas and unique, beautifully crafted bottles. In recent years, tequila has gone a long way to shedding its global reputation as a party drink to be slammed, and a bottle of Mexicos national drink makes for a perfect gift.

El Charro

Both mariachi and charrería originated from this corner of Mexico, so it is fitting that one of Guadalajara’s most traditional shops should be dedicated to these pursuits. People from all across the country visit the shop in search of the perfect boots, hats, saddles and embroidered shirts. El Charro has two branches, one in downtown Guadalajara and another in the Plaza del Sol shopping center. Worth a visit even if you don’t plan on changing career to become a mariachi or charro.

Galería Sergio Bustamante

This town of Tlaquepaque to the south of Guadalajara is internationally renowned for its beautiful pottery and art, with several shops offering exquisite pieces for visitors. None are more impressive than the collection offered by the Mexican artist and sculptor Sergio Bustamante. Worth a visit just for the window shopping, the Tlaquepaque gallery showcases his extraordinary sculptures in wood and bronze, alongside an extensive line of stunning jewelry. Each piece is limited edition and is hand-crafted, with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

JJ Marquin

Another impressive gallery in the suburb of Tlaquepaque is the JJ Marquin. Boasting an impressive catalogue of pottery and embroidery, this is the ideal place for a wedding present or special occasion gift with a uniquely Mexican touch. From beautiful wooden sculptures to ornate tea sets, you’re bound to find something special to take home with you.

Nuestros Dulces, Tlaquepaque

Sweet-toothed souvenir hunters, look no further: Nuestros Dulces in Tlaquepaque offers the most extensive collection of traditional Mexican candy in the state of Jalisco. Tamarind lollipops, caramel concoctions and sugar skulls abound in the sweet-smelling shop. Nuestros Dulces also sells a truly impressive range of tequila. In fact, the collection is so impressive that it holds the Guinness World Record for the largest variety of tequila brands in a single shop.
