The Mexican city of Guadalajara is a magnet for great artists. Below are seven to scope out when visiting this vibrant city.

Homero Regla “Melkart”

Homero Regla “Melkart” is a painter and muralist born in Guadalajara with an artistic career of more than 20 years, and he is now considered one of the most prolific artists in the city. His portfolio includes a large number of easel works and more than 30 murals in public spaces, including in City Hall building, Presidencia Municipal de Mascota Jalisco.

In addition, “Melkart” is a professor at the Cabañas Culturales Institute.

Omar Ortiz

The work of Omar Ortiz is considered hyper-realistic. He was born in Guadalajara in 1977. He studied Design for Graphic Communication, where he learned techniques of drawing, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, and airbrushing. In 2002, he attended his first classes with painter Carmen Alarcón, whom he learned oil painting from.

Rita Basulto

Rita Basulto studied painting in the School of Plastic Arts and years later earned her degree in Audiovisual Arts at the University of Guadalajara. She has participated in more than twenty exhibitions as a painter. She has also had success with a film career and served as director of Lluvia de ojos, winner of the 11th National Short Film Competition of the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE).

Alejandro Martínez “Peque”

Reynaldo Alejandro Martínez, better known as “Peque,” was born in Guadalajara in 1973. He’s primarily focused on street art for more than 20 years, with a large number of his murals painted on the walls of the city.

Gabriel Macotela

Painter, sculptor, engraver, and draftsman Gabriel Macotela is a versatile artist born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1954. He studied at the National Institute of Fine Arts and at the National School of Plastic Arts in San Carlos. His first individual exhibition occurred in 1976 at the Casa del Lago in Mexico City. He has not stopped working since and has participated in a number of exhibitions.

Martha Pacheco

Born in Guadalajara in 1957, Martha Pacheco has created some provocative works, as the primary focus of her art has been necropsy. She uses living people to model for her art.

Mario Martín del Campo

Mario Martín del Campo has a long history in Mexican art. Considered one of the last plastic artists of the magical realism movement, he’s had work featured in exhibitions since 1977 throughout Europe, the U.S.A., Canada, Central America, South America and Mexico.
