Founded just 47 years ago, Cancún is a recent city in which fashion is equally young. However, the resort’s popularity and heavenly backdrop have proved inspiration for many a designer from the area. We introduce you to the four creatives setting the fashion scene alight in Mexico‘s lively hotspot.

Ernesto Hernández

Born in Mexico City but resident in Cancún since 2010, Ernesto Hernández has revolutionized the concept of fashion in Mexico. Inspired by international trends, he offers cosmopolitan easy to wear clothes for the young at heart. Since making his debut at Vancouver Fashion Week in 2001, and later on winning the Tactel Award, Hernández’s work has been featured widely in the media and in international magazines including Playboy. His latest collection, called ‘City Streets’, includes straight-cut tops and skirts in yellow, white and black, culminating in beautiful and versatile looks that can be worn day and night. David Salomón

The heavenly setting of Cancún has inspired the hippie-chic style of David Salomón, a Mexican designer of Lebanese origin whose sophisticated feminine creations encourage women to feel comfortable in their own skin. Awarded the ‘Universal Excellence’ prize and considered one of the 100 most influential people in Mexican fashion, his talent has surpassed borders, and he has dressed international artists such as Eva Longoria, Kate Walsh and Teri Hatcher. His designs, which have been shown at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Mexico, include dresses, skirts and tops in a variety of different styles and vibrant colors, and always retain a note of elegance as their key defining factor. His latest collection, ‘Batik’, features pieces made on beautiful handpainted silk.

Erica Flores

Erica’s unique and original clothing stems from her belief that every design has to look natural and fitting to her customer’s needs. This ethos prevails in her wedding collection, with stylish dresses suitable for the beach designed with the character of the bride in mind. Her ‘Dressing with art’ collection includes couture dresses, tops and jewelry featuring Mexican designs embellished with needlework from local artisans, while her sexy swimsuits can be found in almost every hotel in Cancún. Her experiences and Mexican heritage have influenced her fashion for the last 30 years.

Mildred Rubin

Mildred is a talented fashion designer born in Chiapas but raised in Cancún. Proud of her roots, she created a brand of bikinis to promote the area’s artisanal heritage. Her pieces are sexy, classy and elegant, with vibrant colors hand-embroidered by Indian artisans from Chiapas. Her collections have been presented in fashion shows in Mexico, Spain and Berlin, and are currently sold in Cancún, as well as in London, Paris and Spain, while her work provides employment, training and counselling to artisanal groups living in extreme poverty.
