With all the amazing activities available to do when visiting the San José area, it can be easy to miss the dinnertime bell. When on vacation, you are free to feast at whatever hour suites you. However, if dinner calls you name late, or your stomach starts to rumble later in the evening, it is nice to know that there are some late night options to quell your hunger. Here’s a selection of the best.

1. El Gaff

El Gaff is a fun spot to grab a few craft beers and enjoy some high quality bar food. For those with a later appetite, fret not; El Gaff is open until 2am most nights. This dog-friendly, late night spot has great specials like 2 for 1 pizzas on Tuesdays. They have a diverse menu that serves up all sorts of delicious items like burgers, fish tacos, tuna tartar, and choripán—a grilled chorizo with chimichurri sauce, presented like a hotdog.

2. Stiefel Pub

Stiefel Pub is a tasty late-night spot that serves up great burgers, tacos, wings, chicken fingers, thick cut fries, casados, and an impressive selection of craft beers. Stiefel Pub is a great place to mix with the locals and fill your belly with bar food and beer. Hungry late? Not a problem here.

The Market at the Intercontinental Hotel is one of the best places to go for super late-night eats. It is open until 3am! The menu is quite impressive. You can build your own sandwich, pasta, pizza, or gourmet burger pretty much any time of the night. They also serve great salads. This affordable and delicious spot has something for every late night craving. The setting is modern and comfortable too.

4. Alma de Amón

Alma de Amón is an upscale restaurant that serves up a wide variety of Mexican, Peruvian, Costa Rican, Caribbean, and other international dishes, sometimes until 12am. This is a fabulous dinner spot for those looking to dine a little bit later. It has received raved reviews for its menu where they have everything from steak and pizza to Cuban sandwiches and an assortment of tapas.

5. Costa Rica Beer Factory Inc

The Costa Rica Beer Factory Inc has over 130 types of beer and some really good bar food to accompany it. Open until 1am, this is an ideal choice for those looking for a bite to eat during or past traditional dinnertime. They have food items like huge burgers, chicken wings, and BBQ ribs with mashed potatoes, plantain chips, and French fries, among a lot of other great choices.

6. 8ctavo Rooftop

This trendy rooftop establishment is part of the Sheraton Hotel, but is open to the public. The views from the roof are actually quite stunning. Open until 3am everyday except for Sundays and Mondays, this is a classy spot to grab some late night eats and a speciality cocktails. They have traditional Costa Rican dishes, as well as items like shrimp cocktails, hamburgers, and Caribbean jerk chicken.
