Toronto's St. Clair West: The Photos To Give You Neighbourhood Envy

Picture of Stephanie Pereira
Updated: 24 November 2016
Once home to European migrants, St. Clair West has become a multicultural hub, north of the hustle and bustle of the downtown core. Although remnants of its migrant roots still adorn its streets through small, family-run bakeries, markets and boutique shops, St. Clair has undergone quite the transformation in the last few years. Thanks to the (relatively) newly developed streetcar tracks, the St. Clair West strip is not only easily accessible for commuters; but car-friendly, with several parking lots and street parking. Take a look at our compilation of Instagram photos, which are sure to give you neighbourhood envy.

Heydon House

The historic Heydon House on St.Clair West. Built in 1891 and designed by renown Junction architect James Ellis, it was once a rowdy hotel that hosted cockfights in the ballroom until the police forced the fights into the attic. It was also the scene of an infamous brawl in 1903 between workers from the west stockyards and railwaymen from the train depots to the south that pushed a vote to make the Junction dry – a ban that lasted until 2000! Prohibition ended up putting the hotel out of business, and by 1911 Heydon was a rooming house. It is now an apartment building rumoured to be a target for redevelopment. You can still see the name "Heydon House" etched in sandstone at the front of the building #Toronto #torontohistory #stclairwest #thejunction #architecture
