Planning a road trip on Vancouver Island? Stop over at one of these affordable motels in British Columbia’s capital city.

Driving on Vancouver Island is easy – with miles of roads leading through ancient forests to quaint beach towns. As the largest city on the island, Victoria is the best place to start and finish your adventure. Ride the ferry back to Vancouver in just 90 minutes.

1. Mayfair Motel

Located just outside of downtown Victoria, Mayfair Motel is known for its friendly staff and scrupulous cleanliness. The 21 rooms are non-smoking, and all have microwaves and full-size refrigerators. Public transit is outside the door, if you’d rather leave your car in the free parking lot. For shopping and sundries, the Mayfair Mall is just across the street.

The recently renovated Motel 6 is in a prime location, just minutes from Victoria airport and 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the famous Butchart Gardens. Rooms offer tables for two and flat-screen televisions. Opt for a room with a kitchenette to whip up your own meals. A favorite with long-haul truck drivers, the motel is within walking distance of several good restaurants.

4. Helm's Inn

Helm’s Inn offers great value in the heart of downtown Victoria. Choose from contemporary rooms, studios and one-bedroom suites. All have kitchens or kitchenettes with granite countertops and dinette sets. The decor is bright and welcoming. The Royal BC Museum, with its outdoor collection of totem poles and a ceremonial long house, is directly behind the inn, along with an IMAX theatre.

5. Prior Castle Inn

Located in the leafy residential neighborhood of Rockland, suites at the inn are so quiet you can hear the seagulls. The heritage house has been upgraded with heated floors and jetted tubs in the bathrooms. Expect period antiques and oriental rugs over hardwood floors throughout. Ask for the top floor suite with balcony views in every direction. The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Abkhazi Gardens and Craigdarroch Castle are within a 10-minute walking distance.

6. Robin Hood Inn & Suites

The award-winning Robin Hood Inn has been a motel since the 1960s. Not resting on its laurels, the staff goes above and beyond the ordinary, offering complimentary e-bike, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals, as well as free Chromecast and shuttles to downtown. Beds are upscale Stearns and Foster for sweet sleeps, and linens are hypoallergenic. Charge your Tesla in the underground parking lot while you take a short walk downtown.

7. Accent Inns Victoria

Duck the high prices downtown, and head for the duck-themed Accent Inns. The friendly staff here is known for offering excellent service. Rooms are meticulously clean. Kitchenettes are available fully stocked, right down to the wine glasses. Families and pets are welcome – certain small people may leave with a rubber duckie souvenir.

This three-story motel has stood the test of time since the 1960s. It certainly lives up to its name. Each room has floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony overlooking the crashing waves of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Rooms have been upgraded to modern standards, with thick carpets, blond oak furniture and comfy beds. Vintage fans will appreciate the two-bedroom top-floor suite, which has retained its 60s charm, boasting a checkerboard kitchen floor and tangerine-colored cabinets.
