Scuba dive among tropical fish in the Red Sea or explore the historical Al Tayebat Museum, while staying at these affordable Jeddah hotels.

As the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia and the country’s commercial hub, Jeddah could be mistaken for being all work and no play. But this liberal city is home to plenty of world-class attractions, including historical landmarks like the Biet Nassif, gigantic Al-Shallal Theme Park and Mall of Arabia. With so much to explore, Culture Trip has picked the best cheap hotels in the city.

1. Mirage Hotel

This clean, polished accommodation is not far from Jeddah University, and therefore is surrounded by great value restaurants and cafes. Here all the basic amenities and comforts are covered; the 24-hour front desk is handy for late-night flight arrivals and there is free parking available. For more space, book a family room with its large private bathroom and free toiletries. Room service, laundry and housekeeping are included.

2. Diwan Residence Hotel Alsalamah

This budget-friendly hotel is far from basic. Arabian gold accents glitter from the lobby up to the rooms, which all have plenty of space to sleep, wash, cook, watch TV or check your emails. The property is a 15-minute drive to the Red Sea and the same distance to Mall of Arabia in the other direction. It has a restaurant, free private parking, a fitness centre and a spacious terrace.

Accommodation is modern, and ranges from cleverly designed studios to generously sized three-bed apartments.

5. Aquila Hotel

With just 65 bright rooms, Aquila is a small hotel with a personal touch. If the staff catch on that you’re celebrating a wedding anniversary or special birthday, they will go to town on the rose petals and balloons in your room and might even bake a cake. The hotel also has a cinema night every Thursday with a buffet dinner served after the film. It’s a quiet place and rooms feature large desks and super-comfy beds for relaxation and work.

6. Ibis Jeddah Malik Road

The location of Palm Boutique Hotel is a big draw for keen shoppers. It’s just over a mile from the Mall of Arabia and little over two miles from the Red Sea Mall. Rooms have all the mod cons you need with Saudi character thrown in, from dazzling chandeliers to motivational quotes such as “stay strong” in the cafe. A large gold “Good Vibes Only” greets you in the lobby, which fits this fun, positive and convenient hotel.

Welcome to a budget hotel with a luxury veneer. The accommodation keeps up appearances from twin rooms to a presidential suite. Double rooms here not only have a shower with separate bathtub, but come with lunch included. The health club and outdoor swimming pool are impressive and a little bit quirky. Relax at the on-site cafe with shisha and a coffee.

Jeddah is the commercial hub of Saudi and this hotel means business. Located just off Prince Majid Road, it is further away from the ocean and Jeddah’s popular attractions than other hotels, but offers a peaceful place to rest your head. The staff are friendly and efficient, while the rooms are generously sized with king beds. A hearty breakfast buffet is included in the price and the hotel is next to Al Baik restaurant. All boxes ticked.

10. Crown Town Hotel

Book a room here and you might spot one of Jeddah’s top attractions, King Fahad’s fountain, from your window. It’s the biggest of its kind in the world and blasts water from the Red Sea hundreds of metres into the air at more than 350kph. The hotel’s cavernous marble-clad lobby leads to rooms with charming gold wallpaper and welcome-towel swans. There’s a heated outdoor pool, decent spa and a rather funky-looking gym.
