Cardiff’s Millennium stadium is surrounded by a wealth of first rate bars and pubs that offer food and drink befitting a capital city. On international match days, the atmosphere in these venues will often turn up a decibel and offer a unique experience that can only be found in Cardiff. On other days, they remain exceptional places to treat yourself.

1. Bar44

Bar 44 is a quaint tapas bar just minutes from the Millennium Stadium. With a reasonably priced menu, it is a fantastic option should you fancy something Spanish. It’s not just the incredibly high standard of food that hits the spot, but also the level of knowledge, customer service and enthusiasm exhibited by the staff.

2. Great Western

Gastropub, Pub, Pub Grub, British, Steakhouse

Visitors will be greeted by cheerful staff and a welcoming atmosphere at the Great Western. It is a Wetherspoons chain that has been given an added edge through its Welsh charm. Great Western is part of the furniture in Cardiff and is a popular stop when the rugby is on.

3. Owain Glyndwr

Located around the corner from Cardiff Castle and just 200 metres from the Millennium Stadium, the Owain Glyndwr has earned a sizeable reputation as one of the best pubs in the city centre. This place is a must stop on an international match day as fans flood in to fill up on the pub’s beer and food. Every Friday and Saturday night the Owain Glyndwr also plays host to live bands, ensuring entertainment and friendly vibes.

4. Revolutions

Situated opposite the famous Cardiff Castle, Revolutions is another chain bar that has allowed Cardiff to mould it. It is a venue that has mastered the art of cocktail making, and the delivery of spirits. To feel the full benefits of a visit to the bar that is virtually under the shadow of the Millennium Stadium, it is well worth checking out the deals and offers that are often on.

5. O’Neills

An Irish style pub in the Welsh capital, O’Neills is a great gastropub with friendly staff and a wonderful atmosphere. They have a great range of snacks and ice cold drinks on tap, including, of course, Guinness.

6. The Yard Bar and Kitchen

Located on one of Cardiff’s busiest streets, The Yard is one of the best places to be on weekends if you’re looking to soak up the city’s vibrant atmosphere. With a substantial selection of drinks and attentive staff, it is easy to see why this venue has become one of the most popular watering holes located near the Millennium Stadium. That is not to discount its food which is worth sampling. They even play host to live music from time to time, ensuring that no visit is boring.

7. Prince of Wales

A traditional Wetherspoons that has been overtaken by the charm of Cardiff, the Prince of Wales is spacious and a great venue to have a drink, given its friendly ambiance. The pub now occupies what was once a grand old theatre that was built in 1878, the second Theatre Royal to be built in the city. Naturally the Prince of Wales Theatre maintained its name as it transformed into this vibrant pub.

8. BrewDog

After opening in 2014, BrewDog’s Welsh outpost is a hit for Cardiff locals. Situated just over the road from the national stadium, BrewDog’s Cardiff serves the freshest craft beer from an eye-watering 30 taps.

9. Barocco

Barocco is a contemporary bar in the city centre offering food, coffee, beer and a wide range of sprits and wines. The bar has a gothic style décor with high ceilings, leather back chairs, stone statues and large mirrors. To truly make the most of Barocco and its wonderful atmosphere, it is worth timing your visit to nab a 2 for 1 cocktail – available from 17:30 until 22:00 every day.
