Because nothing beats a cold lager in a sunny beer garden, especially now that summer is approaching. If you find yourself in Cardiff on a particularly beautiful day, check out these beautiful beer gardens in the city.

1. The Robin Hood

Pub, Pub Grub

A pub with loyal locals and a great atmosphere, the owners will be the first to tell you that this is the very pub which used to be owned by the Churches — that’s right, Charlotte Church’s family. As such, keep your eyes peeled for Welsh celebrities. In the back beer garden there’s lots of seating and pizza oven, and out the front there’s great people-watching under the awning. Find it near posh Pontcanna, bustling Canton and a 20 minute walk from the city center.

2. Nos Da

Bar, Pub Grub

You can’t really get a more Cardiff view than at this hostel-bar. Sitting in its beer garden you are slap bang beside the River Taff and directly across the water is the Millennium Stadium; when the crowds roar on a match day the noise levels mean you may as well be in the stadium. The bar serves great local ales and always has an international feel thanks to the hostel guests.

3. Juno Lounge

Bar, Restaurant, British

This laid-back restaurant-bar has a lovely roof top beer garden and is in the middle of the Roath area of Cardiff. You can’t help but feel relaxed here with the retro vibe and touches like board games and upcycled furniture. Order a smoothie, a pint or a glass of wine and from the food menu an all-day breakfast, burger or maybe some tapas.

4. Pen and Wig

A big and busy beer garden near the city center and the student area of Cathay, the pub itself boasts a big choice of ales, from local breweries and those further afield. Prices are very reasonable and live music is likely.

5. Fox and Hounds

This lovely grassy beer garden with a play area for children is perfect on a sunny day. It’s a little further out — in the Whitchurch area of Cardiff — where you’ll find churches, charity shops and an almost-village feel. The pub serves up classic pub grub, such as grills, roasts and burgers.

6. The Mochyn Du

Pub, British

This pub is situated between the up-market Pontcanna area of Cardiff and the city centre, as well as being a stone’s throw from the Glamorgan Cricket Stadium. There’s two beer gardens on either side of the premises and both get equally packed on a nice day.

7. The Romilly

The Romilly is where you’ll usually find a lively game of darts in full swing and some good honest pub food like fish and chips. This is topped off by its pretty grassy beer garden which gets the sun for a large portion of the day. Find it between the areas of Canton and Pontcanna, and about 15 minutes walk from the city center.

8. The Cricketers

Gastropub, Pub, Pub Grub

A fancier affair than your average pub, this has a cosmopolitan feel in the garden with its white sun umbrellas and tasteful potted plants. The place serves good quality Welsh food too. Find it on the very long Cathedral Road which leads into the city centre, and near the Glamorgan Cricket Stadium (hence the name).
