When five o’clock comes in Glasgow the city shakes off its work persona and night-time frivolity sparks to life. Wander down the quaint city streets where you’ll experience the delicious chatter of people, the lively clink of pint glasses and the not-so-distant sound of live music. If you’re looking for a cheeky evening out in Glasgow, these local tips are guaranteed to have you painting the town red. Just don’t blame us if you see the sun come up.

1. The Ben Nevis Bar

Bar, Cocktails

The crackling fireplace and stone walls are almost as cosy and welcoming as the hundreds of Scottish whiskies you’ll find at the beloved Ben Nevis Bar. Tucked away in the city’s west end, this is a quintessential Scottish watering hole offering live Scottish and Irish folk music every Wednesday and Sunday night. If you’re looking to rub elbows with the locals, the Ben Nevis will quickly become your favourite new haunt in Glasgow. Recommended by local insider Austin Yuill

2. Glasgow Print Studio

Art Gallery

Support local printmakers and enjoy vibrant art exhibitions at one of Glasgow’s favourite galleries and workspaces. Located within the former Edwardian warehouse of Trongate 103, this gallery sells affordable art from local contemporary and innovative artists. You’ll also find a variety of rotating exhibitions and special events including artist talks. It’s free to attend, and you may even get a small drink upon arrival. This is the perfect place to soak up some of the city’s incredible art scene while also meeting a few local characters. Recommended by local insider Austin Yuill

3. The Stand Comedy Club

Theatre

Witness some of the best comedy in the country at the popular Stand Comedy Club. Here in this intimate school turned basement club, you’ll find events every night of the week, including comedy for the kids on weekends and weekly open mic nights. You’ll find everything from the cream of the local comedy crop to touring comics and big names in the entertainment industry. Prices vary by event but a hilarious night on the town, Glaswegian style, is guaranteed in the area’s finest comedy venue. Recommended by local insider Austin Yuill

4. Sloan's Bar Ceilidh

Bar, Beer

What better way to enjoy a night in Scotland than to attend a traditional Scottish music and dance night? Located right in downtown Glasgow, Sloan’s Bar offers a traditional ceilidh (kay-lee) evening every Friday from 8:30pm until midnight. Grab those dancing shoes and head over to their Grand Ballroom to learn some traditional ceilidh dancing while also enjoying a two- or three-course dinner. As the drinks flow, the night grows later and the dancing speeds up, don’t be surprised if you leave with new friends, incredible memories and a few unexpected bruises. 5. Stereo Cafe Bar

Music Venue

The moment you arrive in Glasgow, it’s easy to see how it became a UNESCO City of Music. Live music is happening everywhere, and one of the most cherished music venues is Stereo, found downtown on Renfield Lane. Stereo dishes out creative vegan cuisine while hosting a diverse line-up of bands. Across from Stereo, you’ll find the Old Hairdressers, a smaller, three-floor venue that hosts everything from experimental arts events and comedy nights to poetry readings and small split band nights.
