Glamis Castle – pronounce it “glahms” if you don’t want to single yourself out as a tourist – sits north of Dundee in the majestic landscape of the Angus Glens. Spend time in this fairytale pink-turret château, taking a private tour of the interior and enjoying the grounds before retiring to a room fit for a queen – Glamis was the late Queen Mother’s childhood home. This modern 95-bedroom hotel has close links to the Carnoustie Golf Links and other golf courses nearby. It has a gym, a pool and a spa and caters for many large events. It’s dog-friendly (just not in the bar), and there’s plenty of exploring to be done on foot in the surrounding coves and clifftops. If you come by car, you can park for free – and it’s a 30-minute drive to Glamis Castle.

The closest hotel to Glamis Castle, just 5mi (8km) away, is the Royal Hotel on High Street in Forfar. This 20-bedroom hotel is popular for pub lunches and has a late-night function room. Request a quiet room if you’re not here to party. When you want to wind down, there’s a gym, a 12m swimming pool and a sauna. It’s family-owned, and staff are on hand with local advice. It also offers free on-site parking.

About 15mi (24km) west of Glamis Castle is a picture-perfect white villa in the peaceful Perthshire Hills, close to Blairgowrie. There’s a choice of 102 guest rooms – including junior suites with bathtubs and walk-in showers – and an on-site restaurant called the Daisy Tasker. This modern space is the antidote to Glamis Castle’s historic vibe, which is a 20-minute drive away.
