Often touted as ‘the new Chorlton’, Levenshulme is a flourishing neighbourhood in south Manchester that is particularly known for its Saturday markets. There’s much more to this small suburb that first meets the eye, however. Take a little time to wander around and discover all that ‘Levy’ has to offer.

1. Visit the best bakery in Manchester

Cafe, Restaurant, Bakery, British

Trove Bakery and Café is a bit of a Manchester institution. Their bread is sold all around the city and people flock from far and wide to enjoy their delicious cakes. Alongside their infamous bread and cakes, the café also serves a constantly changing menu that features fresh, seasonal ingredients with absolutely everything made from scratch. Pop in for brunch all week long, dinner at the weekends, or keep your eye on their events page for a series of exciting supper clubs.

2. Browse the famous Levenshulme market

Bar, Market

Every Saturday (bar January and February), Levenshulme bursts into life as the community-run market spills onto the streets. The market boasts over 40 stalls offering everything from craft beer to homemade jewellery, and there’s usually live entertainment to help to create a buzzing atmosphere. One weekend a month, the market moves to a Friday evening, providing live music and street food traders alongside the market stalls.

3. Hunt for bargains in one of Manchester’s best antique stores

Levenshulme Antiques Village is a huge emporium located in the Victorian Old Town Hall and its out buildings, offering a huge selection of antique furniture and decorative items. Antiques may be both purchased and sold here, and there are several workshops in the courtyard where you’ll find expert craftspeople working on restorations. As well as vintage furniture, the antiques village is a great place to source original fireplaces, chandeliers and niche collectable items.

4. Enjoy a pint, a cup of coffee and an art exhibition at the same time

Bar

Fred’s Ale House is a favourite drinking den for Levenshulme locals, whether your favourite tipple is a cup of artisan coffee or something a little stronger. This bar-cum-café regularly hosts live music events, as well as showcasing the work of local artists in its basement gallery.

5. Learn to play the ukulele

If playing the ‘uke’ has always been an ambition of yours, Levy Uke Up welcomes everyone from seasoned pros to beginners. Twice a month, the group meets up to create music together, or you’re welcome to simply sit and enjoy the music if you prefer.
