To find the best cosy pubs with roaring fires, wholesome menus and local ales, you usually have to travel out of Manchester into the Peaks, the Dales or the Lake District (where you’ll become overwhelmed with the choice of traditional pubs). There are, however, several country pubs within Greater Manchester itself, seemingly made for curling up by the fire with a pint. These are five of the best country pubs close to the city.

1. The Horse & Jockey, Chorlton

Gastropub, British, Beer, Wine, Cocktails, Pub Grub

Located in the bohemian suburb of Chorlton, right on the green and surrounded by beautiful cottages, The Horse & Jockey is a favourite drinking and dining spot for local residents. There’s a small upstairs restaurant if you’re seeking more refined dining, but the sprawling main bar is filled with nooks and crannies for getting cosy and enjoying a pint and a bar snack. During the winter months, the fires are roaring and the tables are full of groups of families, friends and their dogs, warming up inside.

2. The Hartshead, Mossley

Pub, British, Vegetarian, Gluten-free, Pub Grub, Wine, Beer, Cocktails

You’ll find this welcoming inn on the edge of the Peak District, named after nearby Hartshead Pike. If you’re seeking a cosy country pub with traditional décor, a log fireplace and spectacular views over the surrounding countryside, you can’t do much better within a one hour drive of the city. Head here on the way home from a day walking in the hills, or simply make the trip especially to sample the traditional pub menu and local ales.

3. The Eagle and Child, Ramsbottom

Hotel

If you love traditional cosy pubs but also want to support environmentally and socially conscious businesses, then make The Eagle and Child your new favourite boozer. Located in Ramsbottom, a 45 minute drive from the city centre, this traditional pub has pulled out all the stops to ensure that it keeps up with the times. Alongside roaring log burners and a delicious menu, you’ll find an incredible beer garden, an allotment, an orchard and numerous chickens pecking their way around – all of which supply the produce for the menu.

4. Swan with Two Nicks, Dunham Massey

Pub, British, Pub Grub, Wine, Beer, Cocktails

Following a stroll around Dunham Massey estate, head to this traditional village pub for a pint of locally brewed beer or a heaped plate of traditional British pub fare. The interior is divided up into a traditional pub with an open fire and a more formal restaurant area (dogs are allowed in the former), serving local game and beer from the Dunham Massey brewery.

5. The Metropolitan, West Didsbury

Pub, Pub Grub, Wine, Beer, Cocktails, British

It may not be located in the countryside, but this grand public house in West Didsbury certainly creates the same ambience as a country pub. Located in a former railway hotel, The Metropolitan comes to life during the winter months when the fires are roaring in the bar and library areas. Whether you’re seeking a quiet drink, a gourmet pub meal or afternoon tea, this local favourite offers it all.
