The burger scene in the British capital has exploded in recent decades. If you want to survive a conversation about food in London these days, you need to have sampled some of the city’s best burgers and have your own opinions on sauces, cheeses and dry-aged beef patties, lest you be laughed out of town. To help you with this, here’s the ultimate selection of the most outstanding burgers throughout the city.

Dip & Flip

Everything from the patty, the bacon and bun is crispy and browned on the flat grill at this South London based burger joint. Dip & Flip’s unique selling point, however, is their phenomenal three-day-reduction gravy. Every dish is served with a bowl of the magnificently rich beef gravy for dipping burgers and fries in. The flagship ‘dip & flip burger’ has roast beef soaked in gravy as a topping. It may sound odd but one taste of this stuff and you’ll be hooked. This place re-defines the term ‘finger licking’.

Burger Craft

This restaurant features an adventurous menu of burgers which houses an absolute classic called the ‘Juicy Bastard’. This double-stacked beef burger is a giant beast, dripping with beef fat, barbecue sauce and American cheese. It is a guilty pleasure and a Burger Craft speciality that will leave you slightly breathless once you’ve finished. We recommend the mini hash browns which are almost as incredible.

Dirty Burger will rank highly on your personal ‘Guiltiest Meals Ever’ list. The name implies it and the food embodies it. The burgers are fatty and dripping from the sheer weight of calories they carry. They are big, unashamedly meaty patties, covered in mozzarella, pickles and some token salad pieces swimming around on top of the beef juices. If you get the bacon burger, it has a huge chunk of crispy bacon on top of everything else. Definitely worth trying once, even if it does knock a month off your life expectancy.

The Ship

Gastropub, Pub, Restaurant, British

The cheeseburger at this riverside pub is truly fantastic. They use 21-day-aged cuts of steak to make up the patty which sits on salad, pickles, relish and mustard. The cheese is a blend of Red Leicester, Monterey Jack cheddar, butter and cream, all melted down in a fondue pot and poured over the patty in a molten state. The pub is pretty wild at the weekends so if you want to eat in peace you might need to book a table in the restaurant area.

Burger & Lobster

Restaurant, American

This establishment cooks up one of the most upmarket burgers in London and certainly one of the best. As its name suggests, the restaurant only serves burgers or lobsters for £20 a piece. A blend of American corn-fed and Irish grass-fed beef steaks make up a superb beef patty which is adorned with bacon, cheese and salad, all held between two halves of a toasted sesame seed bun. Absolutely delectable – and the lobsters are great too! Bukowski Grill | © London Burger Quest

Bukowski Grill

Market

If you like spicy sauces then you definitely need to visit one of Bukowski Grill’s restaurants. Smoked garlic and scotch bonnet mayo, red onion chutney and jalepeño mustard are just a few of the flavours in their arsenal. Combined with the quality Hereford beef patties, bacon and cheese, you have a winning combination. The mouth-watering triple-cooked beef dripping chips are also not to be missed. Red Dog Saloon

High quality steak is of paramount importance at BRGR.CO. Their grass-fed Scottish Black Angus meat has superior marbling (fatty deposits) which gives extra flavour and juiciness. The meat is melt in the mouth – you have not had a burger like this in your entire life. Vintage English cheddar, Swiss Gruyère, Provelone or Danish Blue can also be added.

Honest Burgers

This restaurant is famous for its eating challenge, in which you need to eat the ‘Devastator’ alongside chips, coleslaw and a milkshake in under ten minutes. Winners get a severe case of meat sweats and a place in the Red dog’s hall of fame. The competition aside, the burger is actually very tasty and definitely fun to try and eat.

With venues popping up left, right and centre, it has become quite easy to find an excellent burger with little hassle. Their bacon cheeseburger called the ‘Honest’ is simply, beef, bacon, pickles and mature cheddar assembled perfectly into this memorable little treat.

If you can beat the queue to get into Patty & Bun, you are in for a meaty surprise. The 32-day-aged steak that goes into the patty is phenomenal. Gorgeous meat is complimented with cheese singles and a mound of sweet caramelised onions that will blow you away. A truly wonderful burger.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Restaurant, American

In 2001, this was the restaurant that started changing the image of the burger in London. These pioneers have a large menu of delights but ‘The Mighty’ is the burger that stands out above the rest, consisting of two huge West-country beef patties slathered in cheddar, bacon, relish and pickles. The secret ingredient here is the garlic aioli that gives it that extra zing. A hearty meal which will leave you suitably satisfied.
