It’s hard to beat the Holiday Inn Hull Marina; it’s within walking distance of excellent pubs and restaurants. It’s also handy for the Deep and ferry terminals. The unfussy rooms include spacious family options; choose one on the south side for marina views. There’s also the chance to watch sailboats bob about while tucking into the bountiful breakfast spread. Kids stay for free, and children aged 12 and under can eat for free, too.

Just north of the city centre, you’ll find the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull. It’s a three-minute walk from Hull Paragon station and a 15-minute drive to the ferry terminal. In the bedrooms, crisp white linen is paired with smudgy greys and taupes for elegant comfort. The Lexington Rooftop Bar, where you can quaff a signature cocktail on the outdoor heated terrace, brings the wow factor. You’ll find a stylish Marco Pierre White Steakhouse on the ground floor, and there’s a good-size gym, too.

This double-fronted Victorian building, with its tall sash windows, looks out over the leafy garden in Kingston Square. As the name suggests, you’re on the doorstep of the Hull New Theatre and about a half-mile (1km) to the waterfront via a stroll through the Old Town. The spotless rooms contain little touches of theatrical razzle-dazzle while retaining a tranquil feel. There’s spacious family accommodation, and the excellent cooked breakfasts are served in the cheerful dining room.

This coaching inn has been providing warm hospitality to visitors to the Medieval town of Beverley since the 18th century (it’s said to be where notorious highwayman Dick Turpin once stayed). Nowadays, it’s all airy elegance; the bedrooms combine restful greys with pretty wallpaper and handsome tweed fabrics. Take a seat under the large glass atrium ceiling in the restaurant for a cooked-to-order breakfast centred around seasonal Yorkshire produce. The Hull ferry terminal is a 35-minute drive from here.

This Grade II-listed country house – complete with creeping ivy, large bay windows and an open fire – shows real attention to detail. The luxurious rooms are individually designed and feature soft, hand-stitched fabrics and provisions of Yorkshire tea with fresh milk and home-made biscuits. Downstairs, beautifully presented seasonal dishes are served on hand-painted china in the Hide Restaurant. From here, you’re around 12mi (19km) north of Hull and well-positioned for a trip to the East Yorkshire coast.
