These Hackney (Lower Clapton) cafes are ideal to visit at the weekend when you have time to explore the surrounding area. If you’re looking for great brunch in Hackney, you’ll love these recommendations which include three on Lower Clapton Road and three on Chatsworth Road.

This friendly place is famous for their brews, stews and one pot dishes. They also serve a great brunch at the weekend which includes some hearty dishes like veggie fry up with homemade beans, speciality veggie sausage, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms and toast. Or you could try a smoked haddock omelette or piperade (a Basque dish made with red espelette peppers, onions and tomatoes) with eggs, bacon plus sourdough toast. There is a sunny courtyard out the back where you can relax if the weather is behaving itself. Brunch style breakfasts cost around £5.50-6.

This bakery and café has a good view overlooking Clapton Square. With its bistro style interiors, this is a grown up dining space where you can enjoy a quiet brunch at the weekend. The menu offers all the breakfast classics like the full English fry up but they also has good veggie and low carb alternatives, if you’d prefer. Other firm favourites include omelettes, eggs benedict, florentine or royale. If you’re not terribly hungry go for the breakfast bun or bacon baguette. Or for a treat order the pancakes or French toast with seasonal berries. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-5pm (kitchen closes 3pm).

For a healthy light bite, try this place which serves breakfast offerings of yoghurt, granola and fruit. You can also order a variety of egg dishes which come with avocado, mushroom, salmon and prosciutto variations on sourdough. They also have a number of grilled sandwiches. It’s a bright and airy space with expansive windows so you can watch the world go by. Sourdough with toppings around cost around £7.

4. Cooper and Wolf

This Swedish café serves up breakfast, brunch and lunch featuring home cooked recipes passed down through generations. The menu has typical breakfast options like scrambled eggs on sourdough with a sprinkling of chives, granola with yoghurt and berries and oatmeal porridge. There are some interesting open sandwiches like boiled egg with herrings on rye or meatballs with pickled cucumber and beetroot on sourdough. From 11am onwards you can opt for their famous hot meatballs and mash, eggs with Swedish sausage or salmon fish pie. Do try one of their in-house baked cinnamon buns which are absolutely delicious.

5. Creperie du Monde

If you’re crazy about crepes head for this cute little rustic café which serves up savoury and sweet varieties. The fillings range from scrambled eggs with bacon and mushrooms or smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, asparagus and hollandaise sauce for breakfast. Sweet treats include classics like lemon juice with sugar or banana with cinnamon. There are plenty of options to choose from and if you don’t fancy a crepe, go for an omelette or Belgium waffle.

6. Venetia’s Coffee Shop

A small and cosy café where you can order a good meaty or veggie fry up for a reasonable price. They also have a selection of omelettes and around fifteen varieties of sandwiches made using organic sourdough bread (baked locally). Whether you want ciabatta, panini or baguette you can order a tasty filling like caramelised onions with goat’s cheese, aubergines and Portobello mushroom. They also have a yummy selection of home baked cakes which you can order to accompany your Italian fair trade coffee or Tea Pigs tea.
