The UK’s answer to the Eiffel Tower might seem rather modest in an age of 100-storey skyscrapers, but the Blackpool Tower was the tallest structure in the British Empire when it was built. It still dominates the seafront today, particularly when dressed up with 25,000 lightbulbs for the Blackpool Illuminations. Accommodation ranges from historic seafront hotels to hip B&Bs. Here’s our pick – bookable on Culture Trip.

The Imperial Hotel opened on the Blackpool seafront in 1867, attracting many notable people, including Charles Dickens and the Queen, and it’s still the pride of the city today. It’s a handsome edifice in brick and carved limestone, and the interior has everything you’d expect, such as a vintage photo-filled bar, a nostalgic restaurant with fluted columns and starched tablecloths, and cosy rooms with vintage details and sea views that get better as you move through the price brackets.

Footie fans have only one choice in Blackpool: the Blackpool FC Hotel. It’s part of the football club, housed in one wing of the historic Blackpool FC stadium. Superior rooms look towards town, while executive rooms overlook the pitch, an enviable vantage point on match days when fans fill the stands. All are styled in a modern, maroon colour scheme, with huge windows and framed photos of Blackpool scenes.

Set back from the seafront, north of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, this guesthouse is indeed built from red stone. It features a grand piano in the breakfast room and large, comfy rooms in restful colours – pale blues, greenish golds, lilac and mauve. Tiled bathrooms with tubs add a touch of glam, and the grand rooms sneak a peek at the sea and Blackpool Tower. It’s a former winner of Channel 4’s Four in a Bed TV show.

Art B&B

Bed and Breakfast

It’s art all the way at this irrepressibly creative B&B on the seafront strip, close to the North Pier. Rooms are not so much sleeping spaces as art installations, with geometric forms cascading down the ceiling, statement mirrors, seafront show signs and neon paintings under blacklight. Understated it is not, but it’s undeniably a memorable place to stay, with sea views from some rooms and vivid colours in every bedroom.

At the south end of the promenade, near Blackpool Pleasure Beach, this Hampton by Hilton is a glass-fronted, modern oblong on the seafront, with big windows for soaking up the sea views. Rooms are minimalist and easy on the eye, with a subtle grey colour scheme, huge flat-screen TVs and floor-to-ceiling windows that transform the seafront into a landscape painting. Huge rooms with two double beds make for easy family stays.

Just inland from Central Pier, this superior B&B has a creative and tasteful design theme. Bradburys is known for its slap-up breakfasts and cream-bun-stuffed afternoon teas.

Expansive rooms have mood lighting and multicoloured stripes, and there are indoor and outdoor pools. Meanwhile, the foliage-filled setting provides a soothing escape after the crush of people on the seafront.
