Located in the picturesque county of Dorset, this idyllic seaside town on England’s south coast has been a holiday hotspot for over a hundred years. There’s glorious seaside fun – a pier, arcades, quaint beach huts and coast-skimming gardens – and a surprisingly trendy pocket of California-inspired surf culture. Bournemouth also has some great self-contained apartments – and we’ve found the best of the bunch.

Once a dance school, this gorgeous white house was converted by Madelaine and Karl to realise their life-long dream of living by the sea. The couple live next door and are on-call for guests staying in their four comfortable and bright apartments, which range in size and share a patio. It’s a 10-minute walk to beaches and the city centre.

2. Sea Road Apartments

Want an unfussy launchpad for your exploration of Bournemouth? This basic bolthole will serve you well. The kitchen is equipped for cooking a big dinner party and there’s a comfy living area and private bathroom. The real draw of this apartment is the location, everything from the beach with its water-sports schools, to the city centre and live performances at the Shelley Theatre are easy to reach from here.

Bournemouth and its restaurants, cafes, pubs and theatres are a short drive away. Everything you need to make this your ideal base is here. Bed linen and towels are provided and a travel cot and high chair can be on request.

Aptly named, this one-bed flat is adjoined to the owner’s house, based near Poole in Dorset. It’s a cosy nook perfect for a couple and comes fitted with a kitchenette, shower and an open plan dining and living area plus a furnished patio. It’s a couple of miles away from Bournemouth city centre on a beautiful part of the south coast. The owner is next door if you need anything.

7. West Cliff Apartment

The nearby attractions could split the room here, but Grosvenor Casino and the Oceanarium have a lot covered in one swoop. Bournemouth beach is a 15-minute walk away. The two-bedroom apartment has kitchen and bathroom facilities including a microwave, washing machine and a hairdryer.
