Pay a visit to the prestigious university and world-class Ashmolean Museum on a trip to Oxford.

Ensconcing yourself in one of Oxford’s B&Bs is a great way to dodge the crowds and really get to know the City of Dreaming Spires. These places – from Summertown to Headington and the historic city centre – will give you a local perspective in this beautiful city.

If quaint is the first word that springs to mind when you imagine a B&B, then this place will definitely surprise you. This 36-room property is welcoming and modern. Based in Summertown, a fashionable part of Oxford with plenty of bars and pubs, it is a half-hour walk or five-minute bus ride to the city centre. Galaxie offers both continental and cooked breakfast, and an airy living room and pleasant garden available all day to relax in after a day exploring the city.

A 10-minute walk from the rail station and 15 minutes from the busy coach station, this 10-bedroom Oxford B&B is in easy walking distance of the museums, theatres and main shopping areas, as well as Oxford’s restaurants and pubs. The rooms themselves are cosy and clean, most have original fireplaces and all come with free wifi, flat-screen TVs and DVD players, tea and coffee-making facilities and hairdryers. You’ll find everything you need for a city break here, including generous breakfast hours if you plan on a lie in.

This central Grade II-listed property, built into the original city walls, is the perfect base if you’re keen to get a flavour of the cosy and quaint. Each room is individually designed, and the hotel is a social enterprise supporting local student charities. There is no overnight reception, so be sure to arrive between 3pm and 9pm – and although there’s no breakfast, there are plenty of places to grab your eggs right on the doorstep.

The generous buffet-style breakfast is either continental or cooked. Choose to take it in the relaxed lounge area, or – in the warmer months – out in the beautiful walled garden. You are only a 10-minute bus ride from the city centre, or a short stumble from the restaurants, shops and bars of Summertown.

These thoughtfully designed studios offer a bit more space than your usual B&B, featuring a kitchenette with fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster. All of the studios – each with flat screen TV and ensuite – are less than a minute walk to the route 35 bus stop to the city centre (a 10-minute bus ride away). Oxford Studios also prioritises sustainability – a recent partnership with a local bike company means there will soon be a supply of bikes for guests to rent.
