This Amazing Hair Dye Changes Colour According To Your Environment

Imagine hair that could be blue outdoors, black indoors, and morph into any shade you wanted in an instant – and no, this is nothing to do with Harry Potter, or any kind of sorcery for that matter — it’s the result of a phenomenal hair dye that has taken the fashion and beauty world by storm.

Hair extraordinaire Lauren Bowker‘s business The Unseen uses a super cool technique to create so-called ‘reactive fashion.’ How do they do it? They focus on the niche concepts of material science and data to create specially commissioned inks, compounds and coatings that result in your locks changing colour when they’re exposed to different temperatures and humidities.

Within exclusive fashion circles, Bowker is known simply as ‘The Alchemist’. Her latest creation, FIRE focuses on the powers of transformation and is a specially formulated chemical cocktail which reveals an array of colours previously not showcased in the hair world.

The street cool product has been designed to be responsive to temperature fluctuations, and is available in multiple fiery colour ranges from bright red to subtle pastels.

So how do they make it? Bowker and her team use a process of thermoregulation in the human skin. This causes the colour change chemical reaction and in turn, hair strands are responsive to certain stimuli – in this case, your luscious locks change according to the environment. When the temperature changes around you, all the carbon-based molecules at the core of the FIRE dye undergo a reversible reaction.

Once the hair is exposed to a particular temperature change, a singular molecule in the carbon bond is more stable than the other. The reaction between these bonds gives rise to a molecule with a slightly different absorption of light, thus creating a different colour. And voila! There you have it, colour crazy hair in all sorts of environments. Cool, huh?
