There are few better places to enjoy the sun than in a beer garden with an ice-cold pint in your hand. As well as being a historical city, heralded for the friendliness of its locals, Belfast is a growing social hub of bustling bars, clubs, and restaurants. Whether you’re looking for a lively place to catch up with friends, or a more relaxed environment, this city has the beer garden for you.

The Dirty Onion

The Dirty Onion is a beer garden uniquely designed to mimic a half-finished building (including exposed brick and beams), and features excellent live music. The menu, courtesy of ‘Yardbird’, offers all the chicken wings you could want so you won’t go hungry.

The Perch is a rooftop beer garden on the sixth floor of 42 Franklin Street. The young-professional clientele, coupled with friendly staff, makes this venue one of the most sophisticated around. Open seven days a week, The Perch manages to blend lavish decor and plush outdoor seating with a homely, familiar feel. The bonus is the stunning view of Belfast’s city centre and surrounding areas. Feeling chilly? One of the staff will always be quick to ask if you need a cosy knitted blanket and another glass of wine.

The Parlour Bar

Located conveniently close to Queen’s University Belfast, the Parlour Bar has become a favourite for students and locals alike. The smoking area has recently had a revamp, turning it into a fantastic beer garden, with exquisite maze-cut hedges, colourful seating and impressive heaters (that actually keep you warm). It’s a must-visit on any bar crawl, if only to sample its fantastic homemade pizza, which is cooked right in front of your eyes in a traditional pizza oven.

Lavery’s

Heralded as Belfast’s ‘Oldest Owned Family Bar’ and a hotspot for stars like Alfie Allen and Iwan Rheon of Game of Thrones fame, Lavery’s has become quite the complex in recent years. Spread over three floors, the venue has something to offer everyone. The original bar is guaranteed to charm tourists with its traditional interior and pub-grub menu and there’s added room in the glass-extension beer garden. Complete with its own bar, you won’t have to make your way inside to get in another round while enjoying the bustling and vibrant atmosphere.

Filthy McNastys

Filthy McNastys is a cosy, quirky bar with an impressive beer garden located on Belfast’s ‘Golden Mile’. The spot is beautifully decorated with colourful fairy lights and vintage arches, all adding weight to its name that’s artfully painted above its entrance: The Secret Garden. Complete with water features and open fires, Filthies (as it’s affectionately referred to by locals) is the ultimate chilled night out, with open-mic nights on Sunday.

Duke of York

Although not a traditional beer garden, the sheer excitement of admiring its old-time-whiskey-bar exterior down an old cobbled street meant this spot had to be on the list. It’s a historical place and the artefacts from old hotels and other by-gone Belfast venues are on show here. Duke of York stands out from the crowd of more modern establishments popping up around the city centre but that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the liveliest places in Belfast.

The National

The ‘Rooftop Garden’ on the High Street’s National is something special. Its arty and relaxed vibe welcomes visitors from all walks of life. It’s known as one of Belfast’s biggest beer gardens and has an impressive cocktail list to match. The summer barbecues make this beer garden such a popular attraction.
