The Best Places To Play Field Hockey In Amsterdam
The Dutch field hockey league is easily the largest of its kind in Europe and the sport is cherished by thousands of people throughout the Netherlands. In Amsterdam, it is common to see cyclists carrying hockey sticks as they travel on their bikes to training sessions or matches, and the city boasts a number of competitive clubs, as well as several smaller, amateur organizations.
AMHC Westerpark
As its name suggests, this hockey club is situated inside of Amsterdam’s Westerpark district – a large, green neighborhood on the western borders of Amsterdam’s historic centre. AMHC Westerpark accepts applicants of all skill level, but unfortunately has a limited number of members, and will inform applicants via email when spaces clear on team lineups. The club has three private fields and indoor training facilities.
AH & BC
AH & BC is the oldest hockey club in continental Europe and is regarded as a major player within Dutch and international leagues. The club was established in 1892 and has maintained an impeccable record throughout its existence. Its male and female teams have remained in the highest Dutch league since their inauguration, and collectively won hundreds of championships. Although AH & BC’s standards are particularly high, the club does offer training sessions.
HC Athena
HC Athena is a relatively young hockey club based in Amsterdam-Oost that has a community-driven spirit and a strong passion for the game. Currently it has 1,800 active members and always welcomes new players. Its home ground features five fields and a clubhouse where players can pick up healthy snacks between sessions. The club encourages competitive and non-competitive players to join, and regularly organizes fitness-orientated training sessions.
AMHC-FIT
Although AMHC-FIT welcomes all age groups, most of its members play in youth categories. For the club, recreation, sportsmanship and fitness come before competitiveness and its main ambition is to create a friendly, constructive environment for its players. Its grounds are located in Amsterdam-Noord and can be reached via a ferry from Centraal Station.
HV Myra
HV Myra has been training hockey players for over fifty years and has a large roster of competing members. The club has several tiers and divides its players according to their skill level, age and gender, meaning that even inexperienced players can find a place at HV Myra. The club’s grounds are located in Amstelveen and are easily accessible from central Amsterdam via the city’s tram service or metro. To organize a training session with HV Myra, potential participants should email the club directly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGYHHasKfck
