Vasastan is Stockholm’s second most densely populated district. It is a quieter, residential area that most tourists usually bypass. However, there are some excellent restaurants here that make it worth a visit. Here’s a list of our favorites.

Himlavalvet

Restaurant, Coffee

Himlavalet has been described as an oasis in the heart of Stockholm. The restaurant, with a name that literally means ‘heaven’s vault’, was first established in the 1870s as a laundry house. Today it features a beautiful outdoor dining area that transports you away from the hustle and bustle of the main town. The traditional Swedish waffle and homemade cakes are not to be missed.

Tennstopet

Located in the heart of Vasastan, Tennstopet takes pride in using traditional Swedish cooking techniques to prepare Nordic delicacies that are hard to come by. The crow and the stockfish are dishes you’ve got to try. In addition to exquisite fare, the restaurant boasts dark wooden furniture and chandeliers, giving off a Scandinavian vibe with a luxurious touch.

Rolfs Kök

Bistro, Restaurant, Swedish

The chef at Rolfs Kök understands how simplicity can be used as a way to enhance one’s dining experience. All guests are invited to sit around the open kitchen, watching from their seats as the food is prepared right in front of their eyes. Spicy jumbo shrimps with grilled gem lettuce and zander green peas is one of the most popular options here.

Tranan

Restaurant, Swedish

Established in 1929, Tranan is one of the oldest restaurants in Vasastan. It is a traditional meeting place and is well-known among the residents of Stockholm. Hearty fare makes up most of the menu, and a particular treat is the fried herring with potatoes, a dish that has been on the menu for eight decades.

Wasahof

Diner, Restaurant, Bistro, French, Seafood

Wasahof is inspired by the bistro culture of France. The chefs here are experts in preparing seafood dishes, specialising in various types of fresh oysters. One must-try menu item is the Edulis, a type of local Swedish oyster that is rarely found elsewhere.

Grill

Restaurant

As the name suggests, Grill is an expert in grilling all sorts of food. The restaurant uses five different grilling techniques to prepare dishes, and boasts nostalgic decorations and vintage furniture, which provide the perfect ambience for social gatherings. Live bands perform every Tuesday and Saturday, filling the venue with vibrant tunes whilst the bartenders create refreshing cocktails.

La Neta

Restaurant, Mexican

Mexican food is very popular among the Swedes and many supermarkets have a big section dedicated to Mexican food. If you want an authentic taste of Mexico, however, you should visit La Neta. Inspired by Mexican street food, the owner of La Neta uses fresh ingredients to bring tropical South American flavors to Sweden. There are numerous options to choose from on the menu, including their signature quesadillas, which are perfect for those who like a bit of spice.
