The Best Contemporary Art Galleries In Sdermalm Stockholm

Stockholm’s most fashionable neighborhood, Södermalm is home to some of Sweden’s best contemporary art galleries. No trip to the Swedish capital is complete without a day wandering in and out of Södermalm inviting exhibition spaces, and of course stopping off for a compulsory fika break in between gallery tours. We profile ten must-visit galleries in Södermalm.

1. Fotografiska Museet

Art Gallery, Museum

One of the most popular attractions in Stockholm, the Fotografiska Museet attracts over half a million visitors each year with it’s innovative exhibitions of international photography. Housed in a converted Art Nouveau-style building, the Fotografiska boasts 2,500 square meters of exhibition space, and hosts four major shows per year alongside 15 smaller exhibitions. In keeping with the youthful neighborhood, the gallery is open until 11pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, making it the perfect alternative evening out.

2. Galleri Kontrast

Art Gallery

Featuring a prestigious selection of documentary photographs, Galleri Kontrast is an independent gallery owned by Sweden’s Press Photographer’s Club. The gallery hosts 20 exhibitions per year, and is considered one of the primary venues for documentary photography in the country. Located in a former bank building, a smaller exhibition space in the old bank vault downstairs offers prints for sale. Previous exhibitions have included masterpieces by Jesper Frisk, Erika Larsen, Linda Forsell and many other acclaimed photographers. The gallery also houses The Swedish Picture of the Year, annually.

3. Grafiska Sallskapet

Grafiska Sallskapet

Home of The Swedish Printmaker’s Association, the Grafiska Sallskapet gallery exhibits the work of its 430 members, to include well-respected artists such as Christel Hansson, Annette Ronald and Ewa Carlsson. Members of the association are chosen each year by a jury, with their works displayed in the largest collection of contemporary prints in Sweden. The Printmaker’s Association founded the gallery to act as a meeting place for print artists, and to encourage art lovers to learn more about the medium.

4. Galleri Knall

Galleri Knall

Galleri Knall displays a permanent exhibition of brightly colored paintings and tapestries delicately created by beloved Swedish artist Christina Knall. Switching between oils, acrylics, aquarelle, graphic art and tapestries, Knall depicts scenes of bustling restaurants and joyful parties, and recreates Stockholm in her work. Many of her works are displayed in the gallery, but she’s also been commissioned to produce public artworks across the city.

5. Seriegalleriet

Seriegalleriet

A true treasure trove for the cartoon-obsessed, Seriegalleriet has a rolling program of solo exhibitions featuring works by the best cartoonists. Alongside the exhibition space, Seriegalleriet also sells hundreds of framed original artworks from comic books and animated films. Situated directly between Slussen and Maria Square metro stations, this is one gallery not to be missed by anyone obsessed with those little creatures reminiscent of their childhood.

6. Centrum För Fotografi

Museum

Although primarily a membership association, all art lovers can take great pleasure in exploring the photography shows that CFF puts on for the public six times a year. Exhibiting the best of Swedish and international photography, CFF works to support and promote professional photographers through these solo and group exhibitions. CFF also hosts prestigious annual photography events such as the graduation exhibition for the masters students at the University of Gothenburg’s School of Photography.

7. Candyland

Candyland

An informal alternative art space, Candyland is a non-profit gallery run by a group of ten brilliant artists who exhibit their own works, and invite others to exhibit alongside them. Founded in 2004, Candyland has hosted well over 100 successful exhibitions complemented by gigs, performances, screenings and workshops to add to the interactive atmosphere of the gallery. Amongst the artists whose work have been displayed here are Timja Femling, Annika Malmqvist and Stina Brockman. Multimedia exhibitions range from photography to installation art, paintings and video installations.

8. Sodra Galleriet

Sodra Galleriet

One of this neighborhood’s most dynamic galleries, Sodra Galleriet regularly exhibits both Swedish and international works in multimedia. The gallery focuses specifically on graphic art, fostering a particularly contemporary atmosphere. Every style and generation has a place at Sodra.
