The Ural region is making a name for itself as a contemporary art hub to rival Moscow and St. Petersburg. As the region’s major city, Yekaterinburg is home to fantastic galleries and museums that show off its cultural prowess. Whether you’re after traditional or modern art, here’s our pick of the best galleries in the city.

Ural Vision Gallery

Opened in 2009, this gallery exhibits contemporary paintings, sculpture, video art and photography from both European and Russian established and emerging artists. Since its beginnings it has worked regularly with the Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art, as well acting as the intermediary between local contemporary artists and art fairs and galleries across Europe and Russia. Ural Vision has a number of main exhibitions per year, while the artworks by local artists in the permanent collection are for sale year-round.

Stenograffia

Stenograffia isn’t a gallery per se, but rather an annual national festival of street art that runs out of Yekaterinburg in July. Embellishing the streets with installations, graffiti art and pieces of public art, Stenograffia transforms the city into a gallery. While the festival calls upon established street artists of Moscow and Yekaterinburg to create work for the event, there are also open access streams where emerging talent and less well-known artists get the chance to display their work.

Ural's National Centre for Contemporary Arts

The organising body behind the Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, this spot is the primary authority on contemporary art in the region and the Ural branch of the nationwide NCCA organisation. This is the place to get up to speed on the coolest, most innovative art in town – the venue hosts performance, installations, photography, sculpture, video art and visual art, made by artists from across the globe as well as featuring works and exhibitions showcasing local talents.

Sviter Street Art Gallery

Art Gallery

Translating to ‘sweater’, this gallery reflects Yekaterinburg’s history of art on the streets, showcasing both artworks and offering workshops and lectures on street art. Exhibitions encompass an eclectic collection of graffiti art, installations, public art, stencilling, mixed media artworks and photography. A real insight into the alternative side of Yekaterinburg, it has also hosted tattoo festivals.

March Centre of Photography

A relatively new entry in Yekaterinburg’s gallery scene, and something of a photographic powerhouse in the region, the March Centre of Photography was founded by photographer Denis Tarasov, chairman of the Sverdlovsk region’s branch of the Russian Union of Art Photographers. Here, award-winning photographers from around the world and Russia exhibit their work across landscape and wildlife photography as well as contemporary photography and digital collages. The centre also offers a children’s program and film screenings.

Museum

Also not a gallery, but a flagship cultural event in the Ural region, this is one listing that should not be missed. Drawing on recourse from the NCCA Yekaterinburg, Perm Contemporary Art Museum and contemporary art centres across Russia and the globe, the event shines the spotlight on some the brightest stars of contemporary art, such as the legendary Jenny Holzer, alongside local talents who can more than hold their own on a global platform. The event also makes the most of Yekaterinburg’s iconic and historic constructivist architecture by using key buildings as venues.

Art Bird Gallery

A commercial gallery that sells and displays artworks and craft from local artists, the Art Bird Gallery promotes the region’s stone cutting heritage. Here you’ll find intricate jewellery and objects delicately carved from semi-precious stones, as well as ceramics, blown glass and metalwork objects. The gallery also houses the Nevyansk Icon museum, and offers masterclasses on technical aspects of craft making.
