The town of Kętrzyn in Poland attracts visitors mostly because of its proximity to the famous Wolf’s Lair (Wilczy Szaniec), which is a forest base that Adolf Hitler spent over 800 days living in during World War II. Aside from the gory retreat on the edge of town, Kętrzyn is in the heart of Masury – Poland’s Lake District, and is just a short train or bus ride from the larger city of Olsztyn. The town has lots of trendy and typical Polish bars in which to enjoy superb food, or spend an evening listening to music. This list covers the best of the bars in town.

1. Winners Sports Bar

Bar, Restaurant, Polish

Winners Sports Bar is the best bar in Kętrzyn to watch live sports on TV. This stylish venue is large and very central and has impressive gimmicks within. There are signed football shirts and boxing memorabilia up on the walls. There are lizards living in a terrarium. There is a cocktail menu with an abundance of interesting options. Good staff, long opening hours and a range of pub food served long into the night ensures this as one of the best bars in Kętrzyn.

2. Pizzeria Cois

With its cosy seats and brick walled interior, Pizzeria Cois is more than just the city’s coolest pizza restaurant. It is a great bar to mingle in and enjoy wonderful food and drink. In the summer, the beer garden is open and inviting. The pizza menu contains diverse options, including a pizza with egg and one with local mushrooms. During winter months, there is a grzane piwo (hot beer) and a grzane wino (hot wine) available.

3. Restauracja Kardamon

Bar, Restaurant, Polish

Restauracja Kardamon is basically hidden on the side of the Town Hall in Kętrzyn and is a stylish, modern venue boasting an exquisite food menu and good beers and wines. Recommended meals include pork knuckle stewed in beer with roasted potatoes and sautéed cabbage, and Mazury grapes with meat, topped with bacon and onion, served with sauerkraut salad. After enjoying an evening meal, you can relax over a few beers, wine or vodka shots. The venue sometimes has live music as well.

4. Stara Kamienica

On the opposite side of the square from Kardamon is another local venue with a dichotomous design (modern layout and vintage decor). Stara Kamienica (which translates to ‘Old Apartment House’) is an old converted building complete with a bar, a bistro, a restaurant and even a venue for weddings and parties. The menu contains various types of Polish pierogi and a range of local wines and beers. It also makes for a cosy coffee venue in the day time, then transforms into a dance hall and party venue at night.

5. Centro Pub

Right in the middle of Kętrzyn is the Centro Pub, which as well as being a local pub, also has a pizzeria attached to it and an outdoor beer garden. The drink menu has international beers available, such as Guinness, Heineken and Desperados. The lounge area has cosy corner seats to relax in. Pizza, pasta and salads are the main dishes to enjoy while watching live music or cheering for a favourite sports team.

6. City Club

Bar, Polish

While most of the bars, pubs and restaurants in Kętrzyn close before midnight, the best option for night owls is City Club, which is open late on weekends and stays open late for parties too. It’s inside a complex that also has a bowling alley, but the main thrills here are good DJs, vodka shots, affordable beer and a night of dancing in a well-designed basement club.

7. Hotel Wanda Bar

For a more calm and relaxed experience, the bar inside Kętrzyn’s Hotel Wanda serves a traditional range of Polish food with a nice selection of beers to go with it. The interior is open and calming. It is also an interesting place to meet tourists, many of whom will be visiting Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair.
