Naples is famous for its pizza and pasta – savoury delicacies that draw even the fussiest foodie to the pretty Italian city. However, when the sun is shining, there’s only one thing to perk you up – gelato. We pick Naples’ finest.

Gelato flavors

Casa Infante

A popular local cream business dating from 1940 is Casa Infante. Ice cream flavors vary from figs with rum to salted caramel. This ice cream shop is also noted for its fresh fruit smoothies.

Gelato Mennella

Way back in 1969, Antonio Mennella opened up a pastry shop in Torre del Greco. Fast forward more than 40 years later, and the founder’s sons have turned those humble beginnings into a booming business of sweets and ice cream. Il Gelato Mennella is complete with a modern laboratory which comes up with innovative flavors. All ingredients used are natural and fresh. Gelato | © Ashley Gorson / Flickr

Fantasia Gelati

After about 20 years of serving ice cream, Fantasia Gelati earned the prestigious Golden Cone award. This is based partially on the fact that the owners seek to create a multi-sensory experience for their clients, using innovative ingredients such as water buffalo milk and fresh fruit.

Rol Gelateria

Two friends, Olga Nigro and Roberta Rubino, are behind Rol Gelateria. This is a top notch ice-creamery which has recently been noted by Dora Sorrentino as one of the best ice cream shops in Naples. They insist on only serving ice cream that has been made with local ingredients, such as lemons from Sorrento. The shop also sells dairy-free ice cream and gluten-free cones. Gran Caffe Ciorfito

Though Gran Caffè is famous for its flavored coffees, some patrons have named this cafe as the best place to get ice cream in all of Italy. In a classic Italian coffee environment, sample the simple, yet delicious flavors. If you would like to further satisfy your sweet tooth, feel free to order one of the local pastry specialties, such as babà.

What do Frank Sinatra and I have in common? We are both from New Jersey. While the Garden State is beautiful, I love exploring and traveling to new places. During my undergraduate career, I studied in both Siena and Bologna. After completing my BA in History and International Relations at The College of New Jersey, I moved back to Bologna, where I worked as the Student Life Assistant for an American study abroad program. In 2014, I moved to London to pursue my MSc in History of International Relations at the London School of Economics. When I am not in lecture, I enjoy baking, exploring London's museums and watching old films.
