Cannaregio, one of the six districts of Venice, has widely remained unchanged by the masses of tourists the city experiences every year. The bars and restaurants in the Cannaregio district are the perfect place to enjoy authentic local life while emerging yourself into true Venetian culture. 1. Al Timon

Al Timon is a little osteria, a simple typical Italian restaurant and bar, run by young Venetian Alex Biscontin, who has turned Al Timon into a popular hangout spot for students and other young Venetians. A typical bacaro on the inside, Al Timon has a lovely outdoor seating area lined up along the waterside. The bar is a truly authentic Venetian locale, where locals go to enjoy the excellent bistro cuisine and a glass of spritz al bitter that is alternatively prepared with Campari instead of the typical Aperol. In the heart of Cannaregio, Al Timon is one of the district’s most stylish meeting spots that stays open past midnight and really comes alive at night.

2. The Irish Pub Venezia

The Irish Pub Venezia, in the heart of the Cannaregio district, successfully combines the tradition of a typical Irish pub with a unique Venetian atmosphere. It also attracts a clientle who like to enjoy the wide range of bottled and draft beers, most notably the famous Guinness and the Kilkenny ale. However, the Irish Pub Venezia also offers one of the best spritz, a typical Venetian specialty, in town. The pub’s extensive drinks menu is complemented with typically Italian bar food and tapas and the Irish Pub Venezia also shows all major sporting events live.

3. Metri Quadrati

10 Metri Quadrati is a relatively new addition to Venice’s bar scene that has already developed into one of the biggest hotspots in the Cannaregio district. Both tourists and locals are drawn to this fantastic bar with its outstanding spritz and sophisticated cocktail creations. 10 Metri Quadrati’s intimate interior is designed in minimalistic white and decorated with great works of modern art by local artists, while the outdoor seating enables guests to enjoy their food and drinks in a prime location, overlooking the Canale di Cannaregio.

5. Il Santo Bevitore

Il Santo Bevitore, just off the busy Strada Nuova in Cannaregio, is a Venetian pub that offers first-class established beer brands as well as inventive craft beers. Traditional beers include Belgian classics, such as Kwak, Blanche de Namur and Chimay, while the outstanding selection of local and international craft beers convinces even the biggest beer sceptics. Craft beer creations, like punks do it better, bad attitude dude, and the meantime London pale ale, can be enjoyed side-by-side with Italian culinary delights. Il Santo Bevitore also organizes live concerts and single-brewery beer tastings from time to time.

6. The Cantina Azienda Agricola

The Cantina Azienda Agricola is an authentic bacaro that is especially popular with locals in the neighborhood. At Cantina Azienda Agricola guests can still enjoy a class of excellent house wine for under one euro and the typically Italian specialty, cichetti (small side dishes and snacks), directly at the bar at great value. The owner, Roberti di Berti, has owned this all-standing bar for over 35 years and has achieved an excellent reputation for his fine selection of sophisticated wines over the years. Roberto di Berti’s extensive personal wine cellar holds over 150 wine brands, including local producers such as Livio Felluga and Pieropan.

7. Alla Vedova

Alla Vedova, literally translated as the widow’s place, is the ultimate Venetian bacaro, which has been run by the same family for over a century. The bar’s décor has been kept traditional, with rustic wooden tables, classic paintings decorating the walls and copper pans hanging from the ceiling. Alla Vedova does take reservations for the few tables it has, however, if you want to experience the bacaro in a truly authentic Venetian manner, stand up at the bar with the locals. Order a typical ombra de vin, a glass of red or white house wine, and immerse yourself in the local culture.

8. Il Paradiso Perduto

Il Paradiso Perduto is more than just a bar. It is a community-oriented meeting point that has been the center of many social movements. A down-to-earth local hotspot, Il Paradiso Perduto was created by a philosopher and grassroot organizer as a genuine piece of Venetian culture. Il Paradiso Perduto has a large group of regulars who fill the bar on a daily basis, however, walk-ins and tourists from all over the world are always welcome. Guests are invited to get into deep conversations with the bar’s locals and experience authentic culture while drinking a great glass of wine. The local band that plays at the bar every night creates a unique atmosphere that should not be missed.

9. El Sbarlefo

El Sbarlefo a charming place with outstanding wine and food that was added to Cannaregio’s bar scene in 2010. The bar’s extensive wine list, with exquisite classics such as a pinot noir from the Trentino region, is especially noteworthy and has something to offer for every taste. This is complemented by a wide variety of delicious snacks, such as the classic cichetti and baccalà mantecato, and fantastic live music by established and up-and-coming local artists.

10. Bar Puppa

Bar Puppa is a simple, intimate bar in one of Cannaregio’s small alleyways that is has become especially popular with Venetian locals. The bar’s owner, Masoud, is the reportedly first Bangladeshi to venture out into Venice’s bar scene and he has achieved an impeccable reputation. Masoud mixes a first-class Venetian spritz and other alcoholic mixed drinks, which he serves alongside his outstanding food menu, including his trademark hamburgers, vegetable samosas and cicchetti.
