County Waterford is home to the oldest city in Ireland, with Waterford’s history dating back to the Vikings. The pretty town is also the birthplace of Waterford crystal. The interiors are clean, modern yet homely, and roof windows allow for plenty of natural light. 4. Kilmokea Coach House

Step back in time at this rental home on the grounds of an 18th-century Georgian stone rectory-turned-guesthouse, in the heart of the Wexford countryside. The coach house, which was restored in 1999, contains a spread of features, with exposed stone walls, antique furnishings and an open fireplace among the mix. The attractive home splits into two sections that can accommodate three to four guests using just one bedroom – or, as a whole, it can sleep up to eight. Guests can make use of the facilities at the main house, comprising a heated pool, tennis court, croquet lawn and gym.

5. Kilmokea Garden Suite

Green-fingered travellers will love this self-catering property, set in the beautiful grounds of Kilmokea. The two-bedroom apartment, in a converted granary, serves up views of an Italian Renaissance-style garden. Many of the original features have been retained, with exposed stone walls and high beamed ceilings. In keeping with the gardening theme, the two bedrooms are named Iris and Clematis.

This pretty riverside apartment is quite the catch, especially for those who enjoy a spot of fishing. Anglers Rest features a light-filled bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom, with a sauna and free parking. It’s close to the beach and local pub, and the generous kitchen provisions also get the thumbs-up.

7. Arlington Lodge Suites

If you’re looking for an Instagrammable façade, this smart Georgian property should satisfy. Arlington House has been converted into nine dreamy, one-bedroom suites, which sleep up to eight. There are also two lodges off from the main house. All of the suites have names with a local connection, with one named after Waterford resident Dorothy Jordan who went on to become feted as one of the greatest comic actresses of her day, and later became the long-term royal mistress of King William IV. This makes for a regal place to base yourself just a 15-minute walk from the centre of town.

8. Faithlegg Estate Holiday Lodge

Roll out of bed and wander around the grounds of one of Waterford’s most spectacular stately homes with a stay on the Faithlegg Estate. There is a mix of self-catering holiday homes next to the 18th-century stately home – which now operates as a four-star hotel – offering two- and three-bedroom houses that are modern yet homely, with an open fire and warm interior. There are fully equipped kitchens, but you can also mosey over to Faithlegg House, where the Roseville Rooms restaurant boasts two AA rosettes.

9. Macs Townhouse

A hot-pink door offers a hint of what you’ll find inside Macs Townhouse, a grey-hued property in the pretty harbour town of Dungarvan that’s home to six hipster-chic apartments. A retro theme runs throughout, with 60s-inspired furnishings, exposed-brick walls and filament-style bulbs. The townhouse used to be Macs Hotel, which was one of the oldest hotels in Dungarvan before it burnt down in 1921; the current building underwent a major refit in 2000.
