A Local’s Guide to Vouliagmeni, Greece
The most exclusive seaside town of the Athenian Riviera – Vouliagmeni – is located around 20km (12mi) south of Greece’s capital. Glamorous, laid-back and lively at the same time, the area is a favourite summer hangout for locals and travellers. Offering plenty to see and do, Vouliagmeni makes a great alternative to the noise and traffic of central Athens. Here’s our guide to Vouliagmeni, Greece.
Things to do in Vouliagmeni, Greece
Vouliagmeni’s Akti Beach is the destination of choice for Athenians who enjoy watersports and beach volleyball. A day at the popular resort guarantees fun for groups of friends and families. Along the coast, visitors can try out waterskiing at one of the several ski centres in the area.
However, the most famous place to check out is Lake Vouliagmeni – a year-round destination in the Attic peninsula and the spot for a distinctive swimming experience. The lake has warm waters – with an average temperature of 24C (75F) – and contains minerals and salt considered to have healing properties for skin conditions. Pair a morning at the lake with an afternoon visit to a local spa and thalassotherapy centre.
For a more adventurous experience, take a brisk walk along the hills of Vouliagmeni, an awesome spot to soak up views of the Saronic Islands. Take a sunset tour along the coast, and combine it with a visit to the wonderful Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. The area is especially romantic at sunset, with stunning views over the Aegean.
Alternatively, you can have a more exclusive experience on a half-day sailing tour. Yachts and boats depart from Alimos Marina – 15 minutes by car from Vouliagmeni – and take you on a journey along the crystal waters of the Athenian coastline.
