The Best Wine Bars In St Tropez

St Tropez has some wonderful local wines and some sublime places to drink a glass or two. Here’s our selection of the best it has to offer in the way of bars. But be warned, St Tropez is expensive and chic, so dress to impress, even in the more low-key bars.

Les Caves du Roy

The Byblos hotel is a local institution and a very chic affair. Its bar, Les Caves du Roy (literally, “the wine cellar“) is no exception. This is where the “A-listers” come to party, so make sure you dress to impress and are not in the least bit tipsy before you arrive. It has recently had a refit so it’s a little less kitsch and the bar is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017. Be warned, it’s free to get in, but a bottle of champagne will cost around €300. They have an impressive resident DJ.

The VIP Room

The VIP Room is another institution. Celebrities flock here for dancing after a good meal (at the attached restaurant) and it can be extremely difficult to get in. Karl Lagerfield once described this place as “the best club in the world” and it regularly tops lists of Best Global Bars. This bar/club is the off-shoot of the main grand-daddy in Paris. It is super sophisticated so dress accordingly, try to make a reservation first and take your credit card.

Le Bar du Port

Le Bar du Port is, unsurprisingly, on the port. It has amazing views. This is another super chic place – all white, mirrors, an amazing sound-system, etc and it’s open all day from 8am. It’s atmosphere changes throughout the day, so if you don’t fancy going all-out, stop for a little breakfast or a nice brasserie lunch. It’s been here since 1963 and has a great chef, but it’s pricey – starters cost around €20.

Café des Arts

Brasserie, Restaurant, French, European, Vegetarian

The Café des Arts is more of a local hangout and doesn’t distinguish as much between the celebrities and the tourists (it’s off the main drag). This is a friendly restaurant/bar that lets you borrow a set of boules to play in the square if you fancy a game. A great little brasserie with a good selection of wines.

Chez Maggy

Bar, Tapas, Beer, Wine, Cocktails, Pub Grub, French

Chez Maggy is a lively bar just behind the old port that specialises in theme nights – The Joker, Go Go girls, etc. Its boisterous evenings are very popular with the local crowd and it serves food too. It’s more playful than chic, where costumes are encouraged. Lively and fun.
