The resort town of Biarritz – on the coast of southwestern France – has been a popular holiday destination since the 19th-century, when it was favoured by European royal families. Today, it’s one of the best surf destinations in Europe – but you don’t need a royal budget to enjoy the sandy beaches and world-class waves. From romantic escapes for couples to family-friendly surf hostels with free board hire, this is our pick of the best hostels and cheap hotels in Biarritz – bookable on Culture Trip.

The house itself boasts three shared dorms for up to five guests and a Japanese-style private room – and beds start at just €27 (£23) per night, including breakfast. There are also large common spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and a barbecue as well as bikes, surfboards and wetsuits for rent. The onsite yoga teacher holds onsite classes three times a week, including one specially designed for a pre-surf stretch.
