The resort town of Biarritz – on the coast of southwestern France – has been a popular holiday destination since the 19th-century, when it was favoured by European royal families. Today, it’s one of the best surf destinations in Europe – but you don’t need a royal budget to enjoy the sandy beaches and world-class waves. From romantic escapes for couples to family-friendly surf hostels with free board hire, this is our pick of the best hostels and cheap hotels in Biarritz – bookable on Culture Trip.
Don’t want to pack your own board when travelling to Biarritz? This five-bedroom hostel in a rustic 400-year-old country house offers a handy “bed, breakfast and board” package that’s ideal for surfers. As well as free surfboard rental, guests have access to bike rentals, surf lessons and free wifi. Choose from four-bed mixed dorms or private double rooms, pick a board, and hit the beach – which is just a 20-minute walk away. The generous continental breakfast includes a variety of cereals, warm baguettes and croissants, jams, cheese, ham, fruit and yoghurt – or you can use the fully equipped kitchen to whip up meals with friends.
Escape the Biarritz crowds at this friendly eco-hostel in the nearby surf town of Anglet, which is renowned for its 11 Atlantic surfing beaches. It’s just a 15-minute walk to the nearest beach, and Biarritz city centre is a 10-minute cycle. The house itself boasts three shared dorms for up to five guests and a Japanese-style private room – and beds start at just €27 (£23) per night, including breakfast. There are also large common spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and a barbecue as well as bikes, surfboards and wetsuits for rent. The onsite yoga teacher holds onsite classes three times a week, including one specially designed for a pre-surf stretch.
Located just 150m (492ft) from Capbreton’s famous coastline – half an hour up the road from Biarritz – this friendly surf house is perfect for surfers in search of an affordable yet convenient accommodation. There are two mixed dormitories with six beds each, a private room for couples and a contemporary penthouse that sleeps up to eight. But the highlight is the west-facing terrace that acts as a sun trap from noon to sunset and features a hot tub to soak in post-surf. There’s also a small garden planted with tomatoes, peppers and herbs that guests can use to whip up a salad in the shared kitchen.
Looking for a friendly hotel near the beach? Hôtel Au Bon Coin is just a five-minute walk from the Grande Plage in a quiet residential neighbourhood. There are 16 air-conditioned rooms, ranging from the three 15sqm (161sqft) standard rooms to the deluxe sea view room and two quad rooms that are ideal for families or groups of friends. In the morning, choose from either a full buffet breakfast for €12 (£10) per person or continental breakfast for a very affordable €7 (£6) per person. In the evening, enjoy cocktails and sharing platters of serrano ham, espelette pepper pie and local sausage on the sunny terrace.
This former family mansion has been transformed into an affordable haven for wellbeing in the centre of Biarritz – just 300m (985ft) from beaches and near the popular Mercado Les Halles. Guests are treated to a seriously indulgent menu of treatments and activities, including yoga, Thai massage, thalassotherapy, a seawater pool, surf classes and hiking. Each of the 20 rooms is named after plants in the flower-filled garden, where the impressive breakfast is served, featuring fresh orange juice, homemade jams and bread and croissants from the renowned Maison Loubere bakery.
