Carlsberg is a small district of Copenhagen, located in the trendy Vesterbro area. Named after the famous Danish beer Carlsberg, which was brewed here between 1847 and 2008, the area is undergoing a transformation. Here you can find the biggest concert hall in Denmark and other cultural institutions. Enjoy a trendy beach bar, see the old western saloon and discover the alternative, underground scene of Copenhagen.

1. Lidkoeb

Situated in an historic building with three stories and charming courtyard, Lidkoeb is cozy cocktail bar with a relaxed atmosphere. The ground floor has a traditional pub feel, with a rather rustic interior featuring brick walls and wooden furniture. There is a long wooden bar and seating places near the window, to enjoy the view outside. The three floors are distinguished by different interiors and atmospheres. Lidkoeb offers a special whiskey bar on the weekends, located on the top floor.

2. Cafe Ludwigsen

Café Ludwigsen is an old school sports bar, with a cozy pub atmosphere. The interior is made of wood, with the bar in the middle and high wooden stools around it. The seating area is located next to the brick walls and the pool table in the middle rounds the relaxed environment. The bar has a lively sport program and besides the expected selection of beers, you can also enjoy some colorful cocktails.

3. Riesen Bar

Riesen Bar is a popular spot with locals, where you are invited to enjoy your drink whilst chilling to music, mostly indie alternative. The interior is very minimalist, with the wooden, curved bar playing a central role. Cocktails and beers are quite affordable, and you will most certainly end up with a shot of Fernet Branca (herbal liquor) next to your beer if you mingle with the locals.

McKluud is a Wild West themed bar. The exterior was made with dark wooden beams, giving the building a look from an old western movie. The theme is applied inside as well, as the interior feels like an old saloon with wooden booths, dimmed lights and minimalist decor. Old rock music is played on the jukebox. McKluud is a spot where students and young people gather to enjoy cheap beer and a smoke; true to the theme, smoking is still allowed inside.

5. Ideal Bar

Located in the VEGA concert hall and party venue, Ideal Bar is a popular spot for locals during the weekends. VEGA is one of the most popular Danish concert venues, hosting around 250 performances in a year. Independently of the bigger venue, Ideal Bar hosts live concerts on a smaller scale and turns into a trendy nightclub on other occasions. The inside is one big open space, with minimalistic decor, perfect for dancing.

6. Stranden Urban Beach

Part of the urban development project, Stranden Urban Beach is a man-made recreational beach, complete with sand, deckchairs and a funky beach bar. The beach is located in the old Carlsberg area and offers a relaxed atmosphere. During the day you can sunbathe, while in the evening you are invited to dance to the DJ’s tunes with a beer or beach-themed cocktail. The opening hours depend on the weather, and on really sunny days it can get really crowded so grab a spot early.

7. Märkbar

The simple, understated vibe of Märkbar is popular with different crowds. The place is reminiscent of alternative Berlin or Helsinki bars, with loud punk music. This is a beer place, offering local brews and a place to bond with other beer aficionados. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Join in for a live concert or one of their themed evenings and enjoy a couple of drinks.

8. Duck and Cover

Duck and Cover is a warm and classy cocktail bar, situated next to the Museum of Copenhagen. The bar is open between Tuesday and Saturday and offers a seasonally changing cocktail menu. Try their Facundito cocktail, one of the 2015 Nordic Bacardi Legacy competition finalists. The summer selection includes Summer Garden and Pan Atlantic Cobbler, fruity based cocktails.

Fermentoren is a great beer bar. The menu changes often, and includes a multitude of different beers both local and international. The interior is one big room, influenced in theme by the cult-classic Big Lebowski movie. There are comfy couches and dozens of candles, creating a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. There’s a garden area with DJ booth, used in summer months. As the beer selection is quite extensive, you can ask for a taste before deciding on your drink for the night.

The Carlsberg district got its name after Jacob Christian Jacobsen opened the first Carlsberg Brewery here in 1847. Nowadays, the old brew house hosts the interactive Carlsberg Tour.
