The Czech capital of Prague has an ancient soul which reveals itself in Old Town, the medieval heart of the city. You can enjoy a cold brew or a freshly shaken cocktail at one of the neighbourhood’s many excellent bars, from a 1940s to 1960s aviation-themed hangout, to a Hawaiian bar serving a knockout Old Cuban and a beer hall on the roof of OD Kotva, a communist-era shopping mall.

U Vejvodů Restaurant, Pub & Beer Hall

Bar, Restaurant, European

The pre-Hussite building housing U Vejvodů was built in 1403. The upper floor has a pub feel, with a young crowd and contemporary music. On the lower level is the beer hall, packed with memorabilia and photographs from the glory days of brewing in the Czech Republic to a soundtrack of Bohemian folk music. The Pilsner Urquell beer, one of the country’s most famous exports, is great value and comes in fresh from the brewery every day.

Dubliner Irish Bar

Bar, Pub, Irish

Just 100 metres from Old Town Square, the Dubliner Irish Bar is the ideal place to grab a cold brew without having to venture too far away from the city’s main historic centre. Though in the heart of the Czech capital, the bar is Irish through-and-through. You’ve dark wood accents in the dining room and there’s Irish comfort food on the menu, such as Guinness stew. Guests also appreciate the wide selection of reasonably priced Irish whiskeys and, with a total of 16 TVs, the bar is also a great spot to watch sport.

T-Anker Bar

Restaurant, Czech, European

You’ve great views of Old Town at the T-Anker Bar on the roof of OD Kotva, a communist-era shopping mall. There is always a new and exciting beer to try, with a large selection of local and international brews that changes weekly. Each beer has a short taste description and if you want to venture into the sometimes confusing realm of bottled beers, in-house ‘beer sommeliers’ can help you choose the best brew based on whatever flavours you like. For hungry patrons, the bar offers a changing menu of affordable dishes that are all paired, by number, to beers on tap.

Double Trouble Music Bar

Bar, Czech, Beer

Between Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, this gothic-style cellar music bar is a popular nighttime destination for locals and tourists. A long list of cheap drinks, coupled with pounding dance music, gives Double Trouble a lively atmosphere. It’s not uncommon for groups of young locals to party here long into the night and, according to their website, Double Trouble is the ‘wildest Prague bar’, with folks hitting the poles and tables to get their groove on.

Aloha Wave Lounge

Bar, Czech

The Aloha Café, Bar, and Wave Lounge is a tad difficult to find on a side street in the middle of Old Town, but it is definitely worth the effort. With a 1930s through 1960s Hawaiian theme, you must try the range of specialty cocktails in the Wave Lounge while enjoying live music — created by famous New York bartender Audrey Saunders, the rum-based Old Cuban is not to be missed. There’s also a range of American and Hawaiian-style food available all day.

If you’re into Instagram, you’ll want to be ready with your camera at Hangar Bar, which is visually very exciting. In the Dušní 9, Prague 1 ‘cocktail quarter’, the theme is ‘aviation from the 1940s to the 1960s’, which translates into two bars with different aesthetics. The Hangar Pilot’s Lounge features Pan Am airlines memorabilia, such as the body of a Clipper aircraft, and you’re served your aviation-themed drinks by waitresses dressed as stewardesses. The Hangar Club meanwhile is dedicated to Hollywood stunt pilots, airplane mechanics, and pilots of the 1940s and ’50s, including World War II pilots.

El Mojito Café and Cocktail Bar

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Cocktails

With hispanic artwork and knick-knacks scattered across the walls, El Mojito Café certainly gives off a latin feel to match its name. On trendy Dlouha Street, natural wood accents warm the space and help create a relaxing environment. The cocktails feature fresh fruit and balanced blends, all artfully assembled. You really should at least start with a mojito — take your pick from 19 different kinds.

Named one of the top four hotel bars in the world at annual spirit awards ceremony Tales of the Cocktail, Black Angel’s Bar is a must-visit for any cocktail-lover in Prague. In the renovated Gothic-style cellar of the Hotel U Prince in Old Town Square, the bar’s atmosphere pulsates with energy amid a 1930s public-house theme. You can enjoy one of history’s forgotten drinks, like the gin-based Corpse Reviver, as you relax on one of the rich, red leather banquettes.

M1 Lounge Bar & Club

Bar, Nightclub, European

A three-minute walk from Old Town Square, M1 Lounge Bar & Club has modern, streamlined interiors accented with neon lighting. The focus at M1 is on the music and a team of several DJs will keep the beats coming throughout the night while signature cocktails, like the vodka-based M1 Cosmo, flow from behind the bar.
