A romantic night out in Sofia can be entertaining and unique at the same time. The capital of Bulgaria offers a range of exciting things to do for couples – from roaming the catacombs end escaping locked rooms, to discovering the most panoramic points of the city. Here’s our pick of the best.
Get lost in the catacombs of Saint Sofia Church
Add some Indiana Jones-style adventure to your romantic day out and venture into the mysteries of the catacombs lying under Saint Sofia Church (the church after which the capital of Bulgaria was named). The multi-level museum features original sarcophagi, multimedia exhibits telling the story of the place, and thrilling tunnels.

Break out from an escape room
Dedicate an hour of your day to a visit to an escape room, and you won’t regret it. There are a number in Sofia and they all have different themes, so you can try more than one should you get hooked! Some of the best are Dextrophobia Rooms, 3 Key Rooms, Teorema Rooms, Hour Escape, and Escapeway.
Take in a film at an open-air cinema
If you ask locals for the best independent cinema in Sofia, many will point to G8 Cultural Center, just a short walk from the main pedestrian Vitosha Boulevard. Besides independent and European movies, the cinema hosts open-air cinema nights in its tiny yard in summer. The atmosphere is cozy and you have a great choice of Bulgarian craft beers on the menu.

Ice skate on a frozen pond
Ariana Lake is actually a pond at the entrance of the central Borisova Gradina Park which turns into an ice rink in winter. It’s open 24/7, so why not plan a late-night skating session for maximum romance points?
Visit a free jazz festival in the park
Not all date ideas have to be expensive. Join the annual A to JazZ Festival taking place at Sofia’s South Park for a chance to listen to world-famous and local jazz and world music bands while sipping cocktails at sunset.
Have fun at a board games club
There’s nothing better than a little competition to add an edge to your night out. Sofia is home to several well-stocked board games clubs where you can challenge each other with hundreds of games.
Have dinner with a view
The View is a restaurant in the city center well worthy its name – situated on the 24th floor of a business building, it offers the perfect setting with a bird’s eye view of the capital. Choose it for a morning coffee or for a dinner and cocktails on the open-air balcony in summer.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
