Even though every Istanbul neighborhood has its own local bakeries, the selection of bread can fall a bit short, in particular for those who prefer specially made artisanal varieties. Whether it’s for that freshly baked morning loaf, a late snack or a bread treat with a twist, we rounded up some of the best bakeries in Istanbul.

Feriköy Organic Market

Specializing in everything organic and ecologically responsible, the Feriköy Organic Market sets up every Saturday with stalls that offer everything from organic fruit and vegetables, to baked goods, dairy products and much more. There are also a few stalls selling freshly made bread varieties, from buckwheat to 100% wheat, as well as special breads like Turkish pide, or bread with olives.

Naan Bakeshop

Located on the Asian side in the lively Moda neighborhood, Naan Bakeshop always has a rack of freshly made artisanal bread such as rye, multi-grain, or 100% wheat. Naan is also a cute café, so if you’re in the mood for a freshly prepared sandwich or a cup of coffee with something sweet, you can also sit down at one of the welcoming tables. Naan’s caramel cheesecake comes highly recommended.

700GR Bakery and Café

Homemade gluten free bread

Another great spot in the Moda neighborhood, 700GR Bakery and Café also offers tasty, freshly made artisanal bread that you’ll have to get your hands on early, before it all sells out. If you’re feeling peckish, the café also offers some great daily dishes, such as lamb shank with fresh vegetables, as well as sweet treats, such as tart with fresh fruits.

Bröd

Located in the upscale Nişantaşı neighborhood, Bröd makes sourdough bread without any additives. Just like the other bakeries, here you’ll also find delicious sandwiches as well as sweet and savory pastries. The bread varieties include rye and wheat, plus loaves and baguettes with walnuts, and olive and rosemary.

240 Derece

If you’d rather your bread show up directly at your door, the online bakery 240 Derece is the perfect choice. You’ll find delicious 100% wheat or rye bread with tomato and rosemary, cranberries and hazelnut, raisins, olives, and walnuts, as well as pumpkin or buckwheat selections. The online bakery’s name, which translates to ‘240 degrees,’ correlates to the oven’s temperature at which the bread, made of organic ingredients, is baked.

Akali

Simit bread sandwiches

Quite the cool café and bakery on a quiet side street in Beşiktaş, Akali has a little bit of everything with a whole lot of flavor. Here you’ll not only find freshly made artisanal breads and delicious sandwiches with seasonal ingredients, but also fresh pasta dishes and an amazing burger. There’s always something new at Akali, so make sure to follow their lively Instagram for their latest food experiment. Their croissants are also some of the best in the city.
