While food in Indonesia is plentiful when it comes to the local staples (you’ll find a vendor practically at every street corner selling nasi goreng, noodles and other foodstuff) getting a classic breakfast can be a bit of a challenge. No fear though, because we’ve strung together this selection of top spots in the midst of Central Jakarta, one of the most popular sections of the nation’s capital.

1. Common Grounds

Cafe, Indonesian

Like the name suggests, Common Grounds is essentially a coffee shop but with a dash of the casual cafe about it, where they dish out tasty breakfast options including eggs, toast and a range of other items. Visitors will love the quiet sophistication of the place, with knowledgeable baristas and great service, even early in the morning. The place is fast becoming the spot to be for the brunch crowd, so grab your seat early and enjoy the classic menu.

2. Sabang 16

Cafe, Restaurant, Indonesian, Asian

Vintage Indonesian fare dominates this cafe menu. Opt for kaya toast and home-made kaya jam like you get in Malaysia or Singapore for a real treat. (Remember, the taste here may be different, due to variations in the ingredients.) Nonetheless, a tasty and delightful start to the day, especially when accompanied by their Vietnamese drip coffee, is on the cards.

3. Kempi Deli

Deli, Indonesian

Located at the corner of the Grand Indonesia Mall, Kempi Deli is a small and unassuming place that packs a punch in its breakfast menu. The star of course is their range of sandwich options, and possibly the best eggs Benedict anywhere outside the five-star set. Centrally located and quiet, the deli is the perfect place to start the day.

Burgreens

The health food fanatics among you need not despair. Jakarta too seems to have caught the healthy eating bug, and Burgreens is a leading restaurant in this space. Their range of breakfast and brunch options include things like sweet potato chips, veggie burgers, chickpeas hummus and a lot more, complemented by their range of healthy and tasty juices. Even those who aren’t big fans of vegetarian meals will find the food full of flavor and fantastic for starting a day of sightseeing in the city center.
