The capital of West Java and Indonesia’s third largest city, Bandung is also known as the Paris of Java, due to its European ambiance, colonial influences and art deco architecture. The city has a relaxed atmosphere and is a popular weekend destination for Jakartans who come to escape and shop at the city’s many malls. Here’s our pick of where to stay.

1. Courtyard by Marriott Bandung Dago

Located in the city centre, the elegantly designed Courtyard by Marriott Bandung Dago is a convenient base in which to explore all Bandung’s attractions, including the landmark Gedung Sate Museum. The five-star Aryaduta Bandung is just five minutes’ drive from the quaint Braga Street area, famed for its 1920s colonial promenade and is also connected by a walkway to Bandung Indah Plaza. Although you may have to tear yourself away from the hotel’s pool area with its cosy, private day beds and whirlpool. The hotel’s 254 rooms are decked out in understated decor, with colonial influences and Sudanese character.

Set in the Dago Heritage 1917 Golf Course complex, one of the most renowned courses in the country, Swiss-Belresort Dago Heritage hotel is surrounded by greenery with a mountainous backdrop. Yet it is still within easy reach of all the city life Bandung has to offer. The hotel boasts an impressive pool overlooking the skyline and an elegant lounge where you can watch the sunset with a cocktail.

5. Moxy Bandung

There’s a healthy dose of individuality and playfulness at the Moxy Bandung hotel, with its strip lighting and graffiti walls. Trendy decor and quirky furnishings with splashes of hot pink are distinctive to the hotel’s brand. There’s even an Instagram corner with props for the perfect shot. The highlight has to be the open rooftop, atmospherically illuminated with hanging lights, with amazing views over Bandung and the mountains beyond.

6. Aston Braga Hotel & Residence Bandung

If you’re looking for some retail therapy, the 1O1 Bandung Dago is moments from the city’s best shopping in Bandung, including the Bandung Indah Plaza shopping centre. Bandung Airport is also conveniently a 30-minute drive away. The colourful Soda Resto & Bar is a great hangout spot, with cosy armchairs and local cuisine.

8. The Papandayan
