Veena Stores has been fulfilling its promise of serving hot, steamy and fluffy idlis to the people in Bangalore for decades. It’s absolutely a no frills, no-nonsense place where the food does the talking. At given times, the footpath adjacent comes alive, bustling with people balancing stainless steels plates. Most people visit for just a few things: the softest, fluffiest idlis you’ll find served with lovely pale green chutney – and to wash it down, a glass of strong filter coffee. They do not use onion and garlic. If you want a quick breakfast and don’t mind standing in a queue, then drop by this place.
Mezzaluna Mövenpick
Restaurant, Italian
Located on the first level of the Mövenpick Hotel, Mezzaluna is an intimate and regal place. Guests are greeted by a unique wine-and-cheese-tasting station which is open to everyone without obligation to buy. A large display kitchen contains the pizza oven, which overlooks almost the entire restaurant and has one of Michelangelo’s masterpieces re-created in the background. The restaurant is famed for its exquisite Italian spread, and it doesn’t disappoint. You should go for the Mezzaluna Lobster Ravioli and the Gnocchi in Tuscan Lamb Ragout.
Persian Terrace is an al fresco restaurant is located on level four of the Sheraton Hotel. It serves exclusive and authentic Persian and Middle Eastern cuisine under the starry night sky. This is also one of the few places in the country where you can order Iranian Caviar served with accompaniments. The vegetarian menu is limited but good. Try the Mago- e-Kabob (jumbo prawns in saffron). The staff is helpful and the service is great, making this an all-round good choice for a special occasion.
Hotel Janatha
Ever since it opened its doors to Malleswaram in 1971, Janata Hotel has been rewarded with staunch loyalists who will argue relentlessly about its merits. The hotel, in fact, remains the same as it was decades ago — right down to its traditionally clad waiters. They have an extremely simple menu including the dosas and vadas that proudly display just the right shade of crisp brown.
