Where to Travel in August 2020 if You Live in England

The prospect of travelling offered something to look forward to during the limbo of lockdown. Now, that prospect is a reality with domestic travel and some international travel a go – so, where to first?

From 10 July, England began welcoming British travellers back to home soil without the need to self-quarantine for two weeks. As did France. And with Paris under 2½ hours from London by Eurostar, it makes a strong case for an overdue city break. The city is slowly opening up, with the world’s most visited museum, the Louvre, back in business under social distancing measures. In authentic Parisian style, you’ll also be able to enjoy a bottle of red at one of its many cafés – try Rue Montmartre in the second arrondissement.

The government is all for domestic travel, and we Brits have been heading in our droves to beauty spots such as Dartmoor National Park, Bournemouth beach and the Lake District. But a holiday is so much more pleasant without the crowds – and why not do it in style with a stay at a luxury lodge. Blackdown Hills, on the Devon-Somerset border, is a glorious patch of British countryside with some great trails, such as those up to Staple Hill or Castle Neroche. As for spending the night, Lower Keats Glamping offers accommodation for a social bubble of six in a spacious safari lodge.

Saint Lucia, in the Caribbean, which is screening travellers for Covid-19 on arrival, is one of more than 50 countries the Foreign and Commonwealth Office considers a “low-risk” category for international travel – and that means you won’t need to self-quarantine on your return to England. Make the most of this status and head out to its white sands, as well as spending time browsing the markets in the capital, Castries, and taking a boat trip to Pigeon Island.

Talk of natural wonders like the Northern Lights and shots of dramatic mountainous landscapes remind us why it’s such a popular destination. You can fly to Reykjavík from London at the moment; from there, make a road trip of it and head five hours north to see Húsavík yourself.
