When most people think of a European vacation, places like Italy, France or Spain spring to mind. What they might not think of is that nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the East, there is Albania, a country with many places to visit and less crowds. Albania is one of the many treasures of Eastern Europe and is a country with terrific mountain views as well as breathtaking coasts. Here’s a list of the top places to admire the best panoramas in Albania.

Porto Palermo, Himara

All the Albanian Riviera offers visitors breathtaking panoramas, but one of the most enchanting and beautiful is the view from the streets that lead to Porto Palermo. This place, used in the First World War as base by Italian military forces, is also home to a beautiful fortress built, by the legendary Ali Pasha of Tepelena, an Albanian administrator during the Ottoman-era. From the road is possible to admire gorgeous views of this fortress as well as the surrounding crystal clear waters. If you have time, and we strongly suggest you to find it, don’t miss the chance to swim in those waters, near the ancient castle – it is one of the most incredible things to do in Albania.

Kanina Castle, Vlora

A great place for gorgeous vistas over the sea and surrounding hills is Kanina Castle, a beautiful and ancient destination located just 6 km from the city of Vlora, the gateway to the south. To reach the castle you’ll have to grab a taxi because there aren’t public buses that go directly to it. Today, there are only few remains of Kanina, but thanks to the walls which are still visible in some parts, it is possible to imagine how large it actually was. The fortress rises on the side of the Sushica Mountain and offers great views over the town of Vlora, the Ionian Sea and the National Park of Karaburun-Sazan.

Accursed Mountains

The Accursed Mountains, located in the north of Albania, offer visitors some of country’s most impressive scenery and panoramas. This enchanting area became a tourist destination only in recent years, so is still relatively unexplored and wild. If you are into beautiful landscapes, deep traditions, mountain sceneries and if you love outdoor activities, well, the Accursed Mountains are the perfect place for you. One of the best things to do in the north, except admiring breathtaking mountain panoramas, is to spend time with locals. Most of the tours organized by local guides, such as Albania2Go, offer the possibility to sleep and eat with local families in one of the old village houses.

Berat Castle

One of the highlights of Albania is the city of Berat, a wonderful destination that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Once you get here, you will understand why. With its beautiful white Ottoman-era houses, ancient mosques and churches, Berat has something special. The best thing to do here, after you’ve visited the town, is to reach the kalaja, or castle, located on the top of a hill. Here you will admire amazing panoramas over the old town and the surrounding rugged mountains.

Lake Ohrid, Pogradec

Nestled between Albania and Macedonia, Lake Ohrid is one of the most beautiful places in Albania. The lake is lined with lovely hamlets, such as Lin, Tushemisht, Drilon, and Pogradec, the main coastal town on the Albanian side. If you are looking for quiet, peace, relaxation and, mostly, great panoramas, the lake is the place for you. Come here in the late afternoon, when the sun goes down to admire the sunset that colors the sky in rose and orange.
