The Chainsmokers have apologised after making a controversial joke about people eating dogs in China.

The electronic-music duo from the US, made up of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart, posted a promotional video of their time in Shanghai on Twitter, after performing at music festival Ultra China.

But the clip was quickly deleted after Pall was accused of being racist by fans after responding to a question about his dog.

Quizzed about whether he’d brought his pooch on tour with him, he said: ‘I mean if she could come anywhere I’d bring her to – well, I don’t know if I’d bring her to China…’

Both Pall and Taggart appeared to laugh at his comments.

The interviewer, who was Asian, put his hand over his mouth.

The band soon came under fire for the remarks, with one person writing: ‘Disgusted at the fact that the Chainsmokers really had the nerve to make a racist ‘Asians eat dogs’ joke in front of an Asian interviewer.’

Another said: ‘Soo how are the chainsmokers jus gonna be racist towards asians while they’re in asia being interviewed by an asian interviewer in asia.’

While someone posted: ’No offense but if the chainsmokers can post a video of them making a racist joke imagine what they say behind closed doors.’

The duo have since apologised, saying they would ‘never intentionally do anything to upset our fans’.

Along with their statement on Twitter, they also posted a link to stopyulinforever.org, a charity that campaigns against the Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
